I've been using nero 6 and anydvd with an iomega x16 external drive succesfully for months, Ive always been able to burn from start to finish in about 15 mins at x4
or 7 mins if I use x8....until a couple of weeks ago - for no apparent reason an average dvd now takes over 40 mins!....have tried defrag and checked for virus etc- i have about 1gb memory with plenty spare
any ideas anyone??? would much appreciate any guidance

Check and make sure your DVD drive is still in DMA mode and not in PIO mode. Do this to see.

Click start/control panel/System icon/Hardware Tab/Device Manager/IDE ATA/ATAPI Controler

Then right click on each IDE channel and click properties then click the Advanced setting Tab and there you should bebale to change the DMA and PIO Mode settings. Make sure it is in DMA mode.

If it is in PIO mode and wont let you change it to DMA mode then delete your DVD drive and restart and windows should reset it to DMA mode.

@chillout8

Try uninstalling your DVD/CD drives and have windows reinstall them. Somtimes they show running in DMA mode but really are running in PIO mode. So give that a try and see if it fixes your problem.

could be onto something here - after deleting/reinstalling - the secondary IDE channel on device 0 is reading transfer mode "DMA if available" but current transfer mode is saying "PIO mode", unfortunately I cant change it - have tried deleting/reinstalling again but still the same - any ideas?

did you unisntall the secondary IDE channel Or was it the DVD drive you uninstalled? Try uninstaling the Secondary IDE channel restart and windows should reinstall the IDE channel.

Ok, maybe someone can help me as well. I'm pretty confused on this one. First what I'm using. Dell 8400 3.0ghz 512mb ram with Dvd reader and seperate DVD burner, running Nero Ultra Edition, using Linkyo 8x DVD+R.
Now to the problem. Basically I can't burn DVD's anymore. When I got the computer about a month ago I could back up DVD's from the reader to the burner using the Nero Recode app using "Burn at Once".
I haven't tried to burn any in awhile and just tried again last night and went through 8 discs without success. Would start burning partially then get a disc burn error (until no I've had no bad discs from this batch of dvd's) I tried some things like using a restore point, deleted some programs (alcohol, liquid) I reinstalled DVD43FREE and AnyDVD and Nero. Tried just using AnyDVD and Just DVD43. Tried different movies (the other night I tried to backup a backup and it failed twice now that I think of it, but I was busy and didn't think anything of it and dropped it) Then got Psycho to burn through, then tried Pete's Dragon again (I know I know, but it's for the younger ones) and got burn error again. It was 2 something in the a.m. so I just quit tryin last night. Any ideas? I did try encoding to the hard disk and that worked fine.
Sorry this is so long for a first post. But your help will be greatly appreciated!

@Optimus - we need a relevant section of your Nero log, minus your serial number which begins with 1A21 or similar. This would show if you had crap media, DMA status, firmware of burner, free memory etc etc

Also there is a thread on newbies forum relating to dell 8400's and problems with oem dvd drives.

Might search for it and see if it pertains as well.

have had a couple quick glances thru your log, and have re-read your original post. One suggestion i would make (not too expertly as i've just got back from pub!), would be to have the burner internally and the dvd-rom externally. From what i've read (and i still don't fully know the answer), you can't (or don't need to) set DMA for external USB drives. For my personal experience, whether or not DMA for (external devices) has been a moot point, as i rip from my (external USB2) dvd-rom and get v good results from it, ie nearly all my movies are ripped via this dvd-rom (i rip a lot of movies most days btw) and nearly all my rips are done in 15mins flat. Then my burns are done on my (DMA set quite happily) internal dvd burner at 4x. 15mins always for burning.
I believe your media are of a questionable quality.
can't determine if you were writing to fast (ie can't tell if you're burning at 8x, maybe you could try 4x)
Quote:
Write speed: 0 KB/s
. Don't know why that's the only reference to write speed in your log.

Now you say some of your discs worked fine, i presume this means 'burned' fine, which doesn't guarantee they'll play fine, but then again i bet the kids have watched them ok.

So, i would swap the 2 drives round first of all, remove all the different burning related apps (noting serial numbers of course) and start again from scratch, enabling dma on the (hopefully internal) burner. Plus the media looks questionable, but at least if you burn at 4x or lower we can start to get you burning again..

I would also go to the Nero homepage and update your program, you are a little behind.

Thanks everyone for your help! I must admit though that I'm not quite sure what you mean by the whole Internal/External part. They are both internal drives that came with the computer. Do you mean take one out and put it in a housing? I really don't want to do that. And the media while being cheap (Linkyo 8X DVD+R) it has worked (yes burned correctly is what I mean)97% of the time for me and is still working on my Mad Dog burner connected to my laptop. And prior to this problem occuring had been working (burning) perfectly with no coasters on my 8400 at home. Thats what throws me off, is that it was working fine and then, nothing. I could understand bad media for a few burns but 10 in a row now? And when I take a disc in my other set up (laptop + Mad Dog Burner) it works. Frustrating. That's odd about the 0X write speed, I didn't even notice that. Is there any programs that you know of that I can diagnose my burner with to make sure it's at least functioning? Nero doesn't seem to be to thorough and checks the media only from what I see.
I forgot about the update for the program, I'm going to try that next, only problem is that computer isn't connected to the internet so I'm not quite sure how to do it.
I'm going to try again and see if I can get a new log.
Thanks again everyone for all your help!

@Optimus - you could download the Nero update via your internet-able pc, then copy over to burner pc. As for questionable media, it creates a need for forums like this !!. I myself no longer have DVD burning issues now that i use v good media (i came to afterdawn not so many months ago as a dvd noob, experiencing problems that were due to crappy media).
Dunno if updating firmware was mentioned earlier in the post already btw, but a proper Nero log should flush all that out..

You can test burnt discs with freely downloadable progs such as dvdinfopro, which can do crc error tests, speed tests etc. nero comes with a few utils that are quite handy too.

Ok, good news and bad news, at least for me. Got my 8400 working again burned 2 correctly back to back. I updated and used TDK media, going to try my linkyo's tonight. But at least I know the drive works.
Onto the bad, I had a problem this morning backing up American Pie on my 5150 laptop with Mad Dog burner which has been perfect the whole time. Here's what I tried: 1st tried TDK 8X media using burn-at-once, partially burned then errored out (I think I saved this log). 2nd, updated Nero (hadn't updated yet on this machine as it was working fine) used new 8x TDK with burn-at-once. Now it errored out but never actually started writing to disc. So... 3rd Used same disc again, started burning got to 99% done and errored. 4th, tried Linkyo disc, burn-at-once, burned all the way till it said 11 seconds remaining and errored out. Here is the error log from that session

I'm not quite sure what it all means, the only thing I make out is that the finalization failed. I'm also not sure why it's starting the burn process at 2.4X when I start a burn-at-once session it used to say 2 things "compiling DVD volume started...." and "Burn process stared (or something like that). Now since the update it includes the speed of 2.4X although both brands of media I am using ar 8X. Is this just because thats the speed the Burn-at-once feature burns at due to buffering a such? Or is this another problem I have to fix? Thanks again for all your help, I'd be stuck if it wasn't for great help and ideas I'm getting here!

Ok, now American Pie 2 and The Abyss did the same thing. So I don't think it's some kind of copy protection. This ticks me off, I just get my one at home working and now my main machine goes down. It was working fine yesterday did 7 movies turned off the laptop went home. Turned it on to check if a dvd my dad made of 7 audio files could be seen on my computer (his is Apple) saw that it could and turned it off. Came in to work today, set up the computer and can't even burn 1! I don't get it, I didn't change anything. Please help! Ahh!
I'm trying The Abyss again using Advanced Analysis to see how it does.
Oh and I do have the latest versions of Nero and AnyDVD.

Oh and I forgot to put this in the last message, when I imported the first American Pie, I was looking through the movie in Nero seeing if they put any bad clips in (IE The boy in green shorts from Bourne Supremacy {I think it was that movie}) and in the unrefrenced materials the only thing there was 1 clip, and it was a language selection for Return of the Mummy, portugese and somethin else. Now I did copy that movie yesterday so I don't know. I checked my NeroRecode folder and it was empty. I don't know, computers suck sometimes.

your problem COULD also be associated with your linkyo media...you can find many threads in the dvd-media section where i talk in length about the quality of this linkyo stuff~ i have a 25pk of FAKE TYs that i just recently found out were linkyo's dvd-r 8x coded out TYGO2...while you are using the dvd+r media, those are optodisc manufactured coded OPTODISCOR8, not very good in my opinion, just a hair above memorex if that.

while im no expert on Nero, i can safely say i know media fairly well...if your problem is resolved by one of the other members here (they are very good at this stuff) then congrats, but, if all else fails, try using better media ie. genuine Taiyo Yudens or Verbatims, and in your particular case, dvd+r 8x for the Verbs is MCC003 coded, very good stuff.

good luck to you...have a good one.

Recommended Media:

Taiyo Yuden 4x dvd-r TYGO1/ 8x dvd-r TYGO2/ 8x dvd+r YUDEN000T02/ 16x dvd+r YUDEN000T03
Verbatim 8x dvd+r MCC003
Verbatim dvd+r DL (MKM001)= flawless no compression backups

Seems it was the ASPI layer. Used a installer and works fine, sort of. I burned about 7-10 DVD's over the weekend and 8 today I get to my ninth today "Laws of Attraction" (for the wife I promise) and I clicked away the do you want to save the log window to quickly not realizing it had failed. Well it had a slight scratch on it and thought it might have been that. So on to my next DVD, Simpsons Season 1 Disc 1. This failed as well. I saved the log but I didn't want to post it up here if I don't need to, I've made this forum about a mile long. I'm trying one more to see if they were flukes or if I have a problem. Thanks so much for the help everyone, that last one (aspi) would have had me down for awhile, I never even heard of that until now!

i don't know much about aspi layers myself, and often read differing views as to whether or not they're needed or not. as long as you got it working, thats good enough i guess :)

If you have any probs again...Have you tried Nero cleantools? it checks your registry for corrupt Nero files.Might be worth removing Nero with neros own remove utility and reinstalling.Dont forget to make sure that all the folders you use to rip to/compress to are empty of any previous vobs etc.And dont worry about the length of your post/thread....the guys here are great and only want to sort out your probs.goodluck
