I was trying to burn a backup of Collateral using dvd xcopy platinum and as it was starting the rip it got hung up and told me that it was having a problem reading a sector. The disc is barely scratched and plays fine in my HTS player. I also got the same problem in dvd shrink and decrypter. I checked the encryption using a-ray and it came back as having dvdcrypt css/cppm. I don't have a dedicated reader installed at the moment but I have sitting in the closet that I could put back in. My burner is a pioneer A06. Are there any tips or suggestions besides get a new burner? The specific error message from dvd decrypter is:

W 20:06:44 Failed to read Sector 3136 - The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.

Hate to say it but my only advice is get rid of DVD X Copy Platinum. At first it might look easier to burn DVDs but in the long run using DVD Shrink and/or DVD Decrypter (both free) is a lot better. There are new copy protections on DVDs since Platinum was released and this could be the problem.

Try another copy of the DVD. Sometimes it doesn't take very much of a scratch to cause read problems.

Cruester,
If you read through freeman's post you will see he has tried both Shrink and Decrypter. I agree with you about getting rid of XCrappy though.

freeman,
Have you got another PC that you can try this on?

Thanks Hallywood,

If it's just a scratch that's no problem. I could just resurface the disc or get another copy as you suggested. I was just concerned that it might be a problem breaking the encryption.

Well then it must just be a damaged disc. Thanks all, I think my problem has been solved.

Just out of curiosity, I see that in DVD Decrypter I can either rip the movie files and write them to HDD or I could rip the disc into an ISO file on HDD. Which is better?

Neither way is better better than the other. It's just a preference thing.
