dmtech 4117 lcd tv audio in?

I have just got a dmtech 4117 17" lcd tv with built in dvd. I want to connect my mp3 plyaer to the audio in (designed for video recorders or external dvd players) but it only works if the video cable is connected along with the audio. So in effect i have to connect the yellow video cable to a dvd and switch it on to activate the sound from the mp3 player... anyone know a way around this?
