Hi
I ripped The Mummy dvd and then used subrip to identify the stream that had the subtitles I needed - I just want the subtitles where they speak Ancient Egyptian and have the place names and dates etc. These are forced subtitles.

Then I ripped that particukar stream from all the vobs and saved 'subpictures as BMP'. This was then saved as mummy.son ready for Maestro.

I opened Maestro and first added the chapters (got from chapterxtractor). Then I added the re-encoded m2v that I created from the original m2v using Tmpgenc. Then I added the AC3 file and then I added the .son file.

I right clicked on the first ten subtitles and checked the 'Force Display'.
I then compiled. Maestro created a VIDEO_TS and an AUDIO_TS folder and put the vob files etc it created into it.

I tried playing the first vob in PowerDVD XP which opened fine and had audio and video in sync. The subtitles should have appeared within the first 2 or 3 minutes or so but there was nothing. I have also tried using Ifoedit to author but again with no subtitles.

Is there anything you can see from what Im doing that is obviously wrong or what I should check with the programs I am using. This is a PAL movie and I have slected the obvious settings as such. Its getting very frustrating as I've been reading and following guide after guide and am not getting anywhere.

I do not have menus as I just want the movie and audio (plus subtitles as necessary).

HEEEEELLLLLPPPPP!!!!

regards

Steve

Try this guide:
http://www.vcdhelp.com/forum/userguides/129774.php

If that doesn't work out for you, as some 2 hours movie dvd are still too big after using that above guide. THen tell me and I'll direct you to another guide (Re-encoding guide).

Hi

Sorry youre right I should have posted what I did.

1. Ripped DVD - PAL Mummy to HD using DVD Decryptor in file mode.

2. Then used Ifoedit to strip away unwanted audio and other subtitles. There are about 5 or 6 english subtitle streams but only one of which are the subtitles for the ancient egyptian bits. this is actually the very last subtitle in the list - STREAM 16. IFOedit creates its new vobs.

3. I then used subrip to extract that stream (16)and saved the ripped subtitles as bitmaps and also as a DVDMaestro *.son file. Use subrip on the new vob files created by ifoedit NOT THE ONES RIPPED BY DVDDEC. For some reason it wont work otherwise. I dont know why but for me it just didnt.

4. Then I used dvd2avi to demux the audio to ac3.

5. Then I used Tmpgenc to re-encode at 4475 bits/sec. Took a while (12 hours)

6. I used ChapterXtractor to extract chapter information.

7. Started up DVDMaestro. Imported the new assets - m2v and ac3. Then imported the chapters and then the subtitles. I opened up each subtitle (about 40 or so) and made sure 'Force Display' was checked. Right clicked on the project name and selected properties and made sure 'set subtitle' was set to 1.

8. Then compiled. It created a VIDEO_TS folder with all the vobs etc. I then re-ran Ifoedit and cliked on vob extras and just kept everything and didnt strip anything. It created new vobs. Then click the VTS sectors button (think thats what it was called)let it do its thing.

9. Then used prassi to burn the new ifoedit created vobs (VIDEO_TS folder) and AUDIO_TS folder .

Thats basically an overview of what I did. If anyone wants more detail please dont hesitate to ask.

The result was superb video quality with surround sound and subtitles when ancient egyptian was being spoken as well as subtitles for place name and dates etc.

regards

hello Ghobit,,,i am not so good in english, but i did tried to follow your instructions..
could you explain step 2-5 more easy to understand?? sorry for my bad english....
what i dont understand is: if u ripp with dvddecrypter in file mode u get only 1 .ifo file and a lot VOB files,,,so how do you get the ac3 file and the movie file(m2v) out of there??? you say demux in dvd2avi to get the sound file??? and re-encode with tmpgenc.??
these steps i dont understand( do u open the vob files in tmpgenc to re- encode???
hope u not find me to boring.....
The reason i am asking is because when a movie gets bigger than 4.37 Gb then u have to re-encode the movie file,,and i have done it with a lot of movies(i use CCE2.50),,but i cant figure out how to get the movie file and the ac3-sound file out of VOB-files, and then re-encode the movie-file,and then get the new movie-file with the ac3-sound file back to VOB-files?? i would be thankful to any help,,but please explain so i would understand,,i am not a newbie to this,,but the english is not that good,,,sorry......
i am asking all this just because i have had problems with some movies to get subtitles to work correctly(only when i have to re-encode the movie) and after that i cant get it together right with the subtitles.....
and wich version of ifoedit do u use???
thanks in advance....SEB..

Hi there

I'll do my best to answer your query. I was aking all the same questions a few weeks ago. This will probably go into more detail than you need but I thought it may help others.

1. Start DVD decryptor and make sure it is in File mode. It should automatically select the main movie files. For example in my case it was
VTS_01_0.ifo
VTS_01_1.vob
VTS_01_2.vob
VTS_01_3.vob

But you also have to highlight by holding down the ctrl key and then clicking on the corresponding .bup and .vob files. For example in this case I would also highlight
VTS_01_0.bup and VTS_01_0.vob BUT you also need the video files ie keep holding down the ctrl key and highlight VIDEO_TS.ifo, VIDEO_TS.bup, and VIDEO_TS.vob.

Now you may not actually need to do all that but I can only tell you what I did and it worked. I am a bit of a newbie so someone will put you right if I'm wrong though seeing that it worked I dont see how it can be.

Now ripped your slected files to your folder of choice.

So in your folder you would have the following
VIDEO_TS.ifo
VIDEO_TS.bup
VIDEO_TS.vob
VTS_01_0.ifo
VTS_01_0.bup
VTS_01_0.vob
VTS_01_1.vob
VTS_01_2.vob
VTS_01_3.vob

Ok I should also point out that your files may be called something different. For example VTS_03_1.vob - sorry if that sounds obvious.

Before you do anything else the best way that I have found and following lots of advice and reading guides etc and what I found works is to do this

Start up Ifoedit (I use 0.94). Click on 'open' and locate the .ifo file you just ripped. From the above this would be VTS_01_0.ifo. Click on 'vob extras' and make sure the following are checked:

Strip streams
Strip VobIDs
Correct Vob-unit (Navigation Pack)Pointers in vob files
Correct original ifo files
Create new ifo files (movie only)

I think these are default settings anyway. Make sure you have a folder ready to take the new vob files ifoedit will create. Do not use the same folder that DVD decryptor did. Select this folder down the bottom of this window.
Click ok and this will open a window with all the streams present. I checked the video, english audio ac3 and made sure the only subtitle stream that was checked was the one I wanted. In this case it was stream 16 which were the subtitles when the characters in the movie spoke ancient egyptian. I knew it was this stream through a little trial and error using dvd decryptor and subrip to identify the right stream. There were 5 english subtitle streams.
Once you have selected the streams you want to keep click 'Strip it' and then put a check in ALL of the Vob ID boxes and then click strip it again. It will now create new vobs, ifos and bups etc.
When its finished click on 'Get VTS sectors'. When its finished click on save and the close Ifoedit.

These new files are the ones we will use from now on.

Open DVD2AVI and click on file and then open and browse to the new folder and vobs that Ifoedit created. Select the first vob and then ok - this will automatically select all the other vobs. Then click on audio and make sure the following are selected
Track Number = 1
Channel Format = Dolby Digital is ticked
Dolby Digital = Demux is ticked
MPEG Audio = Demux is ticked
48 --> 44.1 = Off is ticked

Then click on Video and make sure the following are selected (note this is for PAL)

iDCT ALgoritjm = 32-bit SSE
Field Operation = None is ticked
Colour space = YUV 4.4.2
YUV -> RGB = PC Scale

Now click on open and then save project and it will ask where to save the files. I created a separate folder. DVD2AVI will create 2 files the AC3 file as well as a d2v file.

We now have the audio file. I then loaded the d2v file into tmpgenc and re-encoded it so it was slightly smaller. This creates the m2v file. I see your're using CCE which I tried but it kept crashing so I use the latest version of Tmpgenc which I'm very impressed with. Not sure what files CCE creates.

So after all this I now have an m2v and an ac3 file. The ac3 file was created usinf dvd2avi and the m2v was created using tmpgenc. I used chapterxtractor on the vob files created by Ifoedit to extract the chapters. These are saved in DVDMaestro format.
I then used subrip to rip the subtitles from the vobs that Ifoedit created. These were saved as bitmaps and the info saved as a DVDMaestro file.(*.son)
(let me know if you want details on these two steps. There are guides on howto use these but I'll be happy to go through what I did.)

So now I have four files an m2v, an ac3, a *.son (with corresponding bitmaps) and a *.chp file.

Then I start DVDMaestro. Down the bottom and to the right of the main program window is a grey
box. Right click in it and select 'Import Assent media' and then select the m2v you created. It will take some time to import. Then do the same again but this time import your ac3 file.

To the right is a yellow window which has in it something.dvd project. Right click it and select properties. Make sure the 'set subtitle to' is checked and set to 1. Click ok and come out of that. Click on and highlight the 'menu' file and press delete. Now double click on 'movie'. This will open the timeline window.
Drag and drop you imported m2v file onto the movie timeline (has a picture of movie film next to it). Now drag and drop your imported ac3 file onto the first line of the audio timeline (has a picture of a wavelength next to it).

Above the movie timeline is another timeline which is grey in colour. This is the chapter timeline. Right click in here and select 'import chapter' and select the *.chp file created by chapterxtractor.
Now right click in the first line of the 'ABC' timeline and select 'import subtitle' and import the *.son file created by subrip.

In my case where I only wanted subtitles where they spoke ancient egyptian I then had to double click on each and every subtitle on the timeline. This results in opening a window with a picture of the subtitle with a few options. Up the top is 'Force Display'. I checked this. Also I clicked on the colours tab and down the bottom of the page 'Edit palette' and then load.
You'll find that subrip also creates another file called *.spf. Load this and this will correct things so that the colours appear ok. You only have to change this palette the once and it will correct all the subtitles. However if youre going to Force display then you have to do that for all the subtitles. You may not have to force display. Try it with and without.

Down the bottom of all the timelines you'll see 4:3 which is the default setting. Click on this and select youre desired format. Mine was 16:9.

Now finally right click on something.dvd project and click on 'view connections' and do it again and you'll see the connections window appear. In the bottom window you'll see a load of chapters. Drag Chapter 1 up to the First play line in the top half.

Then click on tools and compile. It will ask a few questions about saving the project and where to save the new vobs its going to create.

This will take 20 mins or so. It will create new vobs, ifos etc. I then restarted Ifo edit and opened the VTS_01_0.ifo created by DVD Maestro. Clicked on 'Vob extras' and said keep video, audio and subtitle stream and then clicked on strip it. Then selected the vobid and then strip it again. It does its thing. When finished click on VTS Sectors again and then save. Then exit that and youre ready to burn.

Phew! Didnt think I'd finish. Sorry its a bit long winded. I'm just trying to give as much info as possible. If you need anything further let me know.

PS remember to name all your files the same. I had the mummy.m2v, mummy.ac3, mummy.chp and mummy.son

regards]

Steve

hi there,,,and thanks for the info that u gave me,,it was very helpful.......
i have figured it out now how to put subtitles in movies(that i have to re-encode),,and using dvd-maestro......
but i have a couple of litle problems:
1) i can not figure out how to get the subs in right color,,,have tried many diferent of options in subrip(1.14),,but i dont understand all the first and second prioraty in the color options,,and there is a lot of colors u can chose???? and when i look at the saved .BMP that i get the subs are blue,,and then later after dvd-maestro and ifoedit when the movie is ready i look at the movie with power-dvd and the subs are red????
there is a little more to come: when i use chaptor Xtractor and then will open it in dvd-maestro i will get some error???but thats no problem cause then i put in my chapters manualely, and i can chose how many to put in,,it is only the sub color.....
i know that u said something about to go in each subtitle and change the palette color for each sub???but that would take about for severel hours to change every 850 subtitle?
By the way, i did see that u first ripped then used ifoedit and then stripped m2v and ac3 out.
i think i have an easier way that did work for me:
first u ripp with dvd-decrypter in file mode,,then u stripp with dvd2avi,,then re-encode the movie file,,then stripp the subs from the vobs u get from dvd-decrypter,,,put it all together with dvd-maestro,,and then at last run ifoedit, and do your stuff with vobextras and get vts sectors....
i have tried it ,,and it works and play perfect in my standalone dvd with subs(only red or blue,,hmmmm???)....
i think this is very interesting to talk about,,but it is a little bit boring to send this here when i am writing to you...
so if u would then u could write to me:
kardon666@hotmail.com,,,and we could exchange some experiens.......
hope to hear from u soon,,,,,,SEB.....

TO Seb

Hi Seb

Although I'm happy to converse via email etc my preference would be to do it via the forum just for the reason that others may learn something.
As a newbie I found it quite frustrating finding a thread that I thought would help only to find people then decided to start emailing each other rather than discussing it publicly.
Lets see how it goes and see if theres any further messages from anyone else if not then obviously noones interested and then I'd be happy to go via email.

As for the subtitle problem. I too had strange colours in maestro. However this is easy to fix.

When you rip your subtitles using subrip and save the bitmaps and project as a maestro file (*.son), if you look in the folder that subrip saved to there will be another file with an 'spf' extension.

Assuming you have maestro open with the m2v,ac3,chapter and subtitle loaded on the timeline do the following:

1. Double click on the first subtitle. This will open the subtitle and to the right almost at the top of the window that opened you'll 3 tabs one of which I think if i remember correctly is called colours. Click on this to open up the page. At the bottom of the page is a button called 'edit palette'. Click on this and the palette will open. On this palette is a button called 'load'. Click on this and it will open a browser window. Browse to the folder where you save the subrip subtitles and find the file ending with the 'spf' extension and load it.

You should now find that the colours are ok now.
Click ok or whatever to close that now.

You only have to do this for one subtitle. If you follow the same procedure for the next subtitle you should find that the colours are alright now. You dont have to do every single subtitle - what a nightmare! only the first one.

I'm not too sure about the chapter error. When you extracted the chapters did you remember to click on the format tab and maake sure it was saved as dvdmaestro file - because its NOT the default. Becareful when you click save because you may find that the 'save type' may be on its default which is *.txt instead of *.chp. Click on the dropdown box and change it to dvdmaestro.

I'll give your way a try without using ifoedit before extracting the m2v and the ac3. I think I already tried it and for me it didnt work. I cant remember as Ive tried this so many times I've forgotten what I have and haven't done.
I'm sure I read on one thread in another forum from someone who was quite knowledgable said that if you dont use ifoedit before doing anything the subtitles might not work correctly. But I'll give it ago.

I've tried CCE and I only ever got it to work once which was a very long time ago. I think the version I used was 2.50. But I tried all version through to version 2.66 with and without DVD2SVCD. But apart from that one time it always crashes so I dont bother anymore. I dont use rmpeg2. The max I can get out of it is 90%.
I use the latest version of Tmpgenc 2.59.47.155 and I have found the quality fantastic. In fact I couldnt really tell the difference between the original and the re-encoded dvd. If I had played that to someone and not told them anything they would have thought they were watching an original dvd. I know CCE is faster but thats ok because I usually set tmpegenc up to encode overnight anyway so thats not a problem.

I've tried to find answers tot he CCE crash and from what I can find out its a well known phenomenon and there is no one cure-all. Some fixes work for some and some work for others and some just dont work for anyone. Thats ok though as I'm quite happy with the quality the new version tmpegenc gives me.

Any way good luck with the subtitles. Remember you only have to change one palette not all of them.

bye for now

Steve

thanks steve,,,i will try that with the subtitles,,,now i know what u did.....
it is so easy to get blind after 6 hours with the computer.......
but one thing that is so strange is that when you have to put subtitles in to movies that u have to re-encode, then the procedure is so much longer compared to the one wich the movie is under 4.37gb.....
but thats life,,sometimes easy and sometimes hard........
