Does anyone know how to get rid of A disk read error. I used FDisk and it worked, but I installed a new HD (western dig 160 g) and I FDisk it with win 98, but I partitioned with Win Xp Pro and when system rebooted to complete win installation, I got disk boot error, press ctl alt del again. I FDisk another HD the same way and it worked with no problem, why it won't work this time I'm not sure. Any suggestions?

I'd reformat and partition under Windows XP assuming the drive will be used with that OS. .. not sure why you were mix/matching OS 98 and XP??? .. just for the fun of it? You may have a corrupt master boot record, therefore, that's why I recommend reformat and repartition. Good luck and keep us posted.

Foxy, one more thing for you: This should work for simple disk read errors; try running in DOS/NT prompt:

chkdsk /r

By the way, what file system are you formatting?? NTFS or FAT32??

I want to install win xp but someone told me to FDisk and that would take care of the disk read error and I only know how to FDisk using win 98. When I partition and format using win xp I always get the disk read error.
