hello any help would be appreciated. First, I'm looking for a video card that would let me play all of the latest games that come out, but i'm looking for a cheap card with excellent value. Another question, when it says for example geforce blah blah blah 256 ddr what does that mean?

Pentium 3 processor
870 MHz
384 MB of RAM

I'm currently looking at
geforce 4 5700LE 8x AGP 256MB DDR (139.99 CANADIAN)
ati 9550 128MB DDR DVI & TV OUT (99.99 CANADAIAN)

again, any help would be appreciated

I can tell you one thing the FX5700le is a good wee card i have the 256mb agp 8x version and play all the good games like Half Life 2 and Doom3 on high settings with no problems, I would however say that you may think about looking into getting some more RAM 512mb, As for the 9550 i have never used one b4 but am sure some1 here has. The only other thing i could say is your p3 may be a wee bit slow for the up-to-date games.

256 ddr is 256meg of ddr ram instead of sdram used by your motherboard. make certain the new videocard is agp3 compliant so it can work on your older agp slot

I would check to make sure your pc meets the cards specifications.

For example, I was trying to decide between the ATI X850 or the 6800 Ultra. The 6800 Ultra requires a minimum 350W power supply, but recommends a 480W PSU. The ATI card requires a minimum of 300 watts.

Pentium 3's are starting to fall far behind in todays world, so i would recommend maybe a new comp,, with a faster processor... when i mean new comp, what you can do is just take everything apart, and use the same power supply, same dvd drive, and mayeb a couple of other things,, but the thing your really gona need is a new mother broad, *i recommend pentium 4 3.0 gigahertz and the video card with "geforce blah blah blah 256 ddr" that would be how much RAM is on the VIDEO card, and one mor thing,, you say you have 384 MB of RAM? your defintly gona need t oupgrade that to play top of the line games...

the power supply will probably have to be replaced as not p4 rated or has the extra power connectors to the motherboard which means just get a new case with a 350watt plus psu in it

I would say he would only need a 400watt, i mean unless he gets a prescott whats the point, i had a 300watt when i got my prescott and the only problem i had with it is when i tried to clock it. I have a 400watt right now and have no power probs.

I would if i was you buy new parts for it, its cheaper that way, all you need is a processor, ram, motherboard, psu and a graphiics card and it will be as good as new plus you would save alot more.
