if the heads are gone, it is possible to retrieve the info by taking the drive to a data recovery place which is expensive. or get another drive of the same model as dead 1, take both apart to put dead platters into good drive carefully so as to pull info off the drive

Have you tried doing that.........I always wondered/considered trying that to see if I could do it, with just the minimal tools - torx driver etc......any tips?

tHE drive started making peculiar noises then just stopped working , cant access it ,cant read it had to pull it out and get another but theres 20 gig of info i would like to recover when time permits.I probably will try ddp's method .Got mates who own a computer shop and will attempt to do it there.

This suckers not going to get the best of me or i might just have to take a hammer to it so that it can reveal its secrets

Another good point their ddp........;-)

I have had several optical devices that have failed detection in the BIOS and these were down to failed resistor packs linked to the IDE port on the device, on the pcb within.

I know the hard drive is not the same but the IDE specification is, so therefore it could be down to that........Lovely.........

ok have taken the hard drive in .They say it can be done but i need the exact duplicate of the existing hard drive. One that was made on the same day, with the same capabilities and properties.Like having a mirror image. But with out it they are going to see if they can access it anyway.

What are your suggestions if its a failure, something else to try!!!
