I know there's always ways to get around stuff in the computer world, so I was wondering if its possible the erase a dvd-r disc? I've wasted a few and I know know how to use the dvd decrypter so I'm just wondering?

The only way I know of is to use a "pink pearl #10"....Naww, can't go there...

Seriously, once a DVD-/+R is written to, It's done. If you make a mistake, you get what is called a "coaster", good only for sitting cold drinks on.

If you are using a DVD-/+RW, then these can be written over and over again.

Not true!

Also good for frisbee and blinding people in the right light at the right angle.

in my mainframe days i used to take great pleasure in doing that (rolling) open-reel tapes down the computer room (the room was almost the entire length of the floor we were on). You'd start to roll the tape then snatch it back and it would careen down the room at 900miles an hour then splinter everywhere

ah, those were the days :)

Skeet shooting anyone?

Once they have begun burning, that's it,they are toast.

Now if you had a firmware issue and they failed during the "lead-in" phase-which happened to me, then you may still use them since no actual burn took place.

cmon people answer the guys q's properly.

u cant actually ERASE the disc BUT when u burn the cd in MULTISESSION MODE (nero supports it maybe other softwares too) u have the choice of either ADDING MORE FILES to the disc or DELETING files and folders

when u delete files and folders, they dont actually get deleted. the burner simply writes some info to say the file doesnt exist

u can keep writing to the disc until

a)the space runs out

b)u finalize the disc (no further writing possible)

The question was about erasing a partially written DVD-r.

I think the answer was given by a few people along with attempts of humor. One can't be serious all the time. Besides, there's alot more things to be serious about than a few pieces of circular plastic.

You cannot delete anything after it is written to a dvd-r or cd-r disk once it has been written. Only rewritable disks can be erased. Multisession is an unfinalized disk, it means you can go back an add to already written material, but you cannot erase. At least this is my experience. The question was can you erase an already written disk, so that closrm (the poster) does not waste anymore disks, and the answer is no.

exactly, all the replies were spot on. We know our media. Plus i definitely know (or used to know) my open-reel mag tapes. I could even put new BOT markers on these tapes and use 'em again.
Kids today and their new-fangled media!!, don't know their born :)

This forum is for advanced questions. This thread should be put in the DVD-R newbies forum and not here. But anyways erasing a dvd-r is very much so impossible. This can be done as you have already been told only with dvd+/- rw's. Since the question has been answered this topic should be considered closed.

We seem to be attracting the "Afterdawn Police" of late! Does sense of humour & answering the question consitute severe reprimands nowadays? Requesting for the thread to be closed is ridiculous!

Ho hum, I guess this is what it has come to!

These are my favorite kind of threads. A newbie comes in with a signature that is hopelessly big and pointless, telling us Senior Members, Members and Junior Members that the question is answered, close the thread. Kinda starting off on the wrong foot here, eh?
