i was wondering that too.

however i've rebuilt a few of my PC's and haven't touched Firefox (version 1.5.0.7) settings on them all, haven't noticed any speed differences to those pc's whose settings i had changed...

If you just install FF2 over your old install, all enhancements made in about:config stay the same.
And yes, these tweaks work in FF2 as well.

- nice one :)

to others - ps figured out why my previous post was a blonde moment, the settings for Firefox are in a file called prefs.js in my Linux home directory on each PC, hence why the Firefox tweaks are still there (i never clear out /home when i reinstall Linux anywhere).

Doh!!

Hi all,

Can someone help me with a few things?

How can i find out what ver. of Firefox i have, i have tried it by going into Tools but cant find anythin!
As i would like to update the ver. & use the tip for it to go a lot faster.
I've jad DSL/Broadband for 6mths & as soon as i was connected i went lookin for FF & have not looked back as i had one bad time with IE & it being hijacked half the time!
As i have been followin/subscribed to this thread for a while, but was put off by the add-ons not bein updated, big tabs etc.

So if someone can reassure me of my fears

As this forum has helped me out a lot, if the mods & members are not thanked enough for their efforts, i do as you're tryin your best to aid a newbie that tries not to answer the same question, that does 'use' the search button!

Thanks

@Norm9 - i think the version info is under 'Help' tab (i'm using Epiphany browser in Linux at moment so going from memory).

Firefox 2.0 info here -
http://www.afterdawn.com/news/archive/8055.cfm

@anyone else - i know this thread is about speeding up FF, just in case it helps any Linux people, i'm just investigating my problems with Firefox under Linux, the 1.5.x.x versions of Firefox for me are horrendously unstable under Linux - different machines, different setups and have found some very good info here - http://www.oreillynet.com/linux/blog/200...inux_so_te.html

Fasterfox - performance and network tweaks for Firefox.

* Prefetch Links
Dynamic speed increases can be obtained with Fasterfox's unique prefetching mechanism, which recycles idle bandwidth by silently loading and caching all of the links on the page you are browsing.

* Tweak Network
Fasterfox allows you to tweak many network and rendering settings such as simultaneous connections, pipelining, cache, DNS cache, and initial paint delay.

* Page Load Timer
A millisecond accurate page load timer tests the effectiveness of your settings.

* Block Popups
A popup blocker for popups initiated by Flash plug-ins is also included.

* Locales included for Chinese, Czech, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, Frisian, German, Hebrew, Hungarian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Lithuanian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Slovak, Slovenian, Spanish, Swedish, Turkish and Ukrainian.

Download Fasterfox (Requires Firefox 1.5 - 2.0)

Thanks creaky & Ireland->(pardon for the question,you're not irish r u ?)

Im usin ver 1.0.7, suppose that would hamper me. Would i be able to upgrade to ver2.0 straight away.

As i have seen the tabs briefly (BIG) as last week someone asked me for my help about the internet-i thought me!! As im no expert But i didnt want to turn him down as the problem was familiar to me, They were havin problems loggin to MSN HOTMAIL (I'd like to know where to post this as i'd like to give somethin back, as you learn somethin new every day!
But long story short->)
I changed their browser to you've guessed it! FF2 & thats where i saw the big tabs, as the only addon i have is Answers 2.1.15 and thats where i noticed with others that i didnt have the updated ver.
Do the addons add to the RAM & slow it down?

Thanks again

Leema01, reduce your sig to conform to forum rules ASAP.
2. An image-only signature should be less than 50kb in size, and be at most 500 pixels wide and 200 pixels tall.

Found this, someone wanna try it out, made by OReilly,

"Speed up page display
To display pages faster, you first need a fast CPU and memory. Don't try the following things on an ancient Pentium II, unless specifically noted here.

Setting the following preference to false is a brutal performance tweak that tells Firefox to process every byte of Web content as soon as it arrives, rather that buffering it in sensible chunks. This makes Firefox web-page handling work extremely hard but theoretically puts page content on the screen faster (recommended only for burning-hot CPUs with super-fast display cards and dial-up connections):

content.notify.ontimer /* default = true */

An even more brutal tweak shuts out all interruptions (including user input) while the incoming web page content is analyzed (not recommended at all unless Firefox is being used as an untended monitoring station):

content.interrupt.parsing /* default = true */

If content.notify.ontimer sensibly remains false, this is the time-out interval for collecting sensible chunks of incoming web page. Lower it for faster incremental page display. Lower it below 10000, and web-page handling will be working extremely hard again (recommended for dial-up):

content.notify.interval /* default = 120000 (micro-seconds) */

For Granny's slow computer, if nothing's arrived recently, then do extra buffering, which saves more CPU cycles. Set to the number of milliseconds to back off each time the network connection is found to be idle (recommended for ancient PCs on dial-up only):

content.notify.backoffcount /* default = -1, meaning never */

Make Firefox pay more attention to the mouse and keyboard at the expense of other activities. Making this a larger polling delay slows down recognition of user input but marginally improves page display:

content.max.tokenizing.time /* default = 360000 (micro-seconds) */

If the user is in the habit of opening 10 web pages (especially 10 tabs) and then sipping coffee while the pages load, making the following parameter's value larger will speed up page display (recommended for slow CPUs):

content.switch.threshold /* default = 750000 (micro-seconds) */

Make a big memory buffer for big pages. Set to a power of 2 minus 1e.g., 16385 (recommended for broadband):

content.maxtextrun /* default = 8191 */

Here are a couple of additional oddments. The following preference tells Firefox to start putting received web pages on the screen right away, even if not much content has been received yet:

nglayout.initialpaint.delay /* set to 0, default = 250 (millisecs) */

The following preference tells Firefox not to bother putting image placeholders on the screen while the real images are fetched, which will also speed page display up a bit (recommended for broadband):

browser.display.show_image_placeholders /* default = true , set to false */

Finally, on Linux/Unix, don't run Firefox with X-servers and X-clients on different machines; that can be quite slow. VNC (or PC-Anywhere, or Windows Remote Desktop) does not affect Firefox performance, except for capping the speed at which desktop updates occur. That is not a Firefox-specific effect, though.

1.11.3. Expand Your Caching
Your best defense against a slow network is a big local cache. In the Options panel, make the cache as big as you can manage. It's really the memory part of the cache that provides the performance, so if your computer is low on memory, a big disk cache won't help much. Buy more memory; Firefox will find it and use it. If you want to set the size of the memory cache explicitly, use these preferences:

browser.cache.memory.enable /* default is true */
browser.cache.memory.capacity /* -1 = size to fit, 123 = 123 Kb */ "

Hi there. please be patient with me - I'm a novice. Thanks!!
Sorry about previous post. Hit the wrong button.

I have recently switched from IE to Mozilla Firefox.

Have been searching all over for ways to improve my connection speed. I run windows XP but on a dial up. Often the Activity connection page stalls so there is no bytes being sent or received. The icon for connection (2 tiny computers!!) more often than not, remains black which tells me that there is not alot going on.

(Note: I am totally useless with this type of thing!!)
I read your post but could not figure out how to set preferences such as: content.notify.ontimer /* default = true */

Also, in the post from Alien13 he said to: Locate the line browser.tabs.showSingleWindowModePrefs . I have been able to do the rest using about:config, but cannot locate this one in the file. Within the Windows Task Manager under the Networking Tab, the Network Utilization % goes from 0 to 95% and back down and up etc. My current Kbps is at 46.

Heres hoping that you can help me.
Many thanks
