When i replaced my mobo, i discarded the internal cable (thinking i wouldnt need it) from the sound card that attached to the front of my pc ( so that you dont have to reach to the rear of the system to plug a mic or headphones in). Now i need to buy one. Are these universal, and whats the proper name for them?

I believe the cable you are talking about is not the one being described to you. You are not talking about the cable that goes from your CD/DVD ROM to your audio card. Those are pretty standard.

You need the cable that will plug into the front of your case and allow the function of your mic/headphone right? First you need to make sure your new sounud card supprts this, and if it does you should be able to aquire the cable from them.

its a small, thin cable that goes from the interior of the sound card over to the front of the case, and it has a regular (3.5mm??) jack to plug in a headphone and mic.

The case is where you should look first to. What case do you have and have you gone to their website to see what cable they have or offer for it. Cases come with those cables attached if they offer the front audio ports.

You are literally better off just buying a new Case with front Audio Mini-Jacks. The sell for $30 bucks or so from local PC Shows, and online. I would breakdown and shell out the extra cash for a good reputable Case and PSU... one that you personally like.

There are companies that sell optional ports to the front such as the link above. Try Newegg.com also if you don't want to transfer everything over to a new case.
