@gurnard - cheers, tho i lose track of threads too easily, if it's the one i'm thinking of, that's sorted now. I can be quite outspoken at work and while in my younger years it got me into a lot of trouble i guess i've learnt to channel it better. But on a public forum like this it can be quite difficult to put things across in posts without offending ppl or having things taken the wrong way. I spend more time editing my replies or drafting replies than actually researching replies, partly for that reason.

(To cut a very long & boring story short i worked 12hour shifts in Computer Ops for 13yrs straight cus i couldn't break into Support, then self-taught myself Unix Admin 5yrs ago from scratch and during that entire time have learnt above all else to fight my corner. Oh and i'm still learning Unix lol)

wow that sounds more fun than my job. However i life afloat so that's something. Boat's too big to go out in much, it's 55ft.

<blatant attempt at getting myself back on topic follows>

These are excellent forums and much easier going than the work ones i frequent. I don't get chance to visit other sites' forums as i'm always around here. I've only been here 6mths and i've learnt a helluva lot here and met loads of great ppl.

Wow, Hack is really a Hack huh? The name suits him. Anyways, Mort, thanks for the links. Im back in ultra dma2 mode for my Sony DRU-510A burner. When I was receiving Power Calibration Errors in Nero when trying to burn large mpg files on a dvd, i changed my media from tdk to verbatim digital movie. I was able to burn a 4.5 gb hd mpeg2 file successfully. This was 1 out of 1 attempts. I didnt do another burn but im hoping i'll receive the same result.
Also, going into msconfig and deselecting unnecessary startup programs supposedly helps with burning in other programs like dvdxcopy platinum. Thanks for the advice and I hope its smooth sailing from here.

HERE IS MY SOLUTION TO "POWER CALIBRATION ERROR"

Shortly this error is the result of a mismatch of the actual cd speed to the intended writing speed. For "speed calibration error" the only thing you need to do is to CALIBRATE the actual power (speed) of the CDROM to the intended writing speed.

1. Install Nero Burning Rom (preferably latest version)
2. Start NeroSmartStart
3. from the main menu select "Extras"
4. select "Control Drives Speed"

"Nero DriveSpeed" will start
5. click "OPTIONS"
6. Select (check) "run at startup"
7. Select (check) "start minimized"
6. Deselect !!!!!" Restore speed settings at startup" (unchecked!!!!)

7. be sure to have correct speed settings in the speed selection window
if not; add your writing speed selecting up or down error and ADD buttons (if you are planning to write X10 be sure to have X10 in the list ;if not add it)
8. Click OK at the bottom ang return back to Nero DriveSpeed main page
(REBOOT YOUR PC IF YOU ARE NOT WORKING WITH WINDOWS XP)
9. On Nero DriveSpeed mainpage click "Read speed" and select your writing speed and see if it matches the "CURRENT SPEED" on the right.
10. That is all::::: If "READ SPEED"="CURRENT SPEED" START NERO BURNING ROM AND WRITE YOUR CD
11. If not select other speeds first and seleck your writing speed finally (you may eject the CD tray and close it to refresh the speed check)

USE NERO DRIVESPEED EACH TIME YOU INSERT A NEW CD AND SELECT THE PROPER WRITING SPEED

TO TEST IF THIS WORKS YOU MAY SIMULATE WITHOUT WRITING ON THE DISK

I saw the matter on many forums with people changing brand new CD writers or wasting CDs for the problem and needed to help. What I would like to add; I managed writing on very cheap low quality CDs with the method I have explained. I used to have the same problem even though my notebook was a brand new one(Dell inspiron 510m with 512 MB RAM). I was writing on CDs without a problem on DATA mode but when I switched to CREATING VCD mode I was always having POWER CALIBRATION ERROR imitating a hardware problem or incapability. My CD writer was not able write even on low speeds such as X4 when I tried creating a VCD. I noticed NeroDrive speed reads current speed different from what it shoud be and equalising them is solving the problem.
Best regards.

ANY QUESTIONS. YOUR TURKISH FRIEND CENAP WILL BE HAPY TO HELP

best wishes without "power calibration error"

I thought that Power Calibration errors had to do with the laser and not speed. The speed is usually read from the disk when you insert it and your program is not going to let you burn faster than is alotted. Also, in Power Calibration the laser tests the disk for adjustment of power on whatever disk is being used, if the disk fails you will get this error. Crappy media give off inconsistent results to the burner and thus you will get this error. My two cents :~)

@K9999 - download Nero info-tool from here - http://www.snapfiles.com/get/neroinfo.html

Run it, note down the following, and paste here. Here's what mine shows -

click on the drive tab, note down the firmware version
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y178/creaky/neroinfotool-example...

click on configuration tab, note down the DMA fields, ie on or off
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y178/creaky/neroinfotool-example...

plus download dvdinfopro (free) and run a media info check on one of the good discs and the same for one of the cheap discs.

I take it you're using Nero, in which case post relevant section of your Nero log, minus serial number which begins with '1A21' or similar - it's in c:\program files\ahead\nero\nerohistory.log or similar.

Plus i had to return my Optorite DD203 as it gave up the ghost after only about 6uses, it wouldn't recognise even retail discs. PS the last firmware i used for this drive was 2.50 dated Jun 2003, and i haven't seen anything newer since

I think I will jump in here although I am playing with a CDRW instead of a DVD burner. For me, this 'power calibration error' is off and on. I tried two brands of CDR (Verbatim and I-forgot-its-name) and one CDRW (Sony). The error randomly popped up on all of them, seemingly higher possibilities at higher speeds. I have a general question here--Is writing a CD similar to writing a DVD? All my tests were actually done in the simulation mode with Nero 6.6. So even during the simulation, the power calibratin is actually carried out? I have read all the post in this thread. I guess I should blame my media more since I just got a replacement CDRW writer (a refurbished one), which did not solve the same problem.
My drive is a Samsung SN-324S CDRW/DVD-ROM combo. I could not find any firmware update for it. The Nero info shows a corrupted system ASPI (as the one shown in an earlier thread) but a working Nero ASPI. I was hoping a 'new' drive will solve this problem. Just wonder if I got a replacement even 'older' than mine (8-month old). Its label does look worn-out to me. Yup!
Thanks for reading through! Please give me your suggestions and comments!

Thank you for your quick responses!

@arniebear,
I will check the link you gave later to see if I missed anything.

@Mort81,
Yeah, I found the update for 324F but got a little confused--Samsung named the firmware for 324F as U20X (now upto U206) but for my 324S, its current firmware is U303. I am not sure whether the two are compatible so I did not go further try it. 324F is still actively supported by Samsung but not 324S--wondering why.

Out of curiosity are you running a dell computer, because this could be the reason for the different firmware.

Exactly, sorry I forgot to mention that. It is a Dell Inspiron 600m. Still have a couple months of warranty so I hoped a replacement would help. But no.

I've done more reading today and keep wondering what brand of CD-R would be a 'high quality' one? I found discussions about DVD's, but could not find any about CDR. Any suggestions? I was at OfficeMax today and told that 'imation' and 'memorex' are top of the line for CDR. I got skeptical since for DVD's these two are on the black-list according to earlier posts.
I have tried Maxell 24X, for which both Neroinfo and DVDinfo reported by Ritek. But DVDinfo reported only
'Available Write Descriptor CLV 4.0x 600KBps'
Is this a problem? Nero seems recognized it as 24X but the Nero CD-DVD Speed tool can not run--either the 'power calibration error' popped up or the 'start' botton was gray. For another no label CDR, DVDinfo reported as 'Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation' but Neroinfo reported 'Verbatim'. And again DVDinfo saw it as only 4.0X. It is all too confusing. Thanks for your help!

@jfish -

as to Memorex and Imation CD-R's, i would go with proper named brands, not Memorex or Imation; however i've used a lot of utter rubbish CD-R media in my time with good results; but now i prefer to buy decent CD media whether it's for audio or data as it's false economy otherwise. Only the other week i bought 100 Verbatim CD's (Taiyo Yuden media code) quite cheaply instead of some nasty no-name discs;
CD-burning is more established than DVD-burning and the quality of CD discs (in my opinion) is not much of an issue as compared to DVDs. I have used many 1000s of CD's over the years and generally the only problems i have with crappy no-name discs is where the silver film flakes off the top of the cheapest discs.. All of that said it's just not worth buying the Memorex/Imation/etc type of CD media when you can get guaranteed top-notch quality for the same price.

As to the Mitsubishi/Verbatim question - MCC (Mitsubishi Chemicals Corporation) is the parent company of MKM (Mitsubishi Kagaku Media), which in turn is the parent company of Verbatim, hence the media codes MCC and MKM
