downmixing 5.1 .ac3 file to 3.1 .ac3 file

if i have an .ac3 file with 5.1 channels, would i be able to keep the 2 front, center channels only and save the .ac3 file without loosing any quality to the remaining channels saved???

i was just wondering if there is a way of remove 2 channels from a 5.1 .ac3 the rear ones and turn it into a 3.1 ac3 file.

any help would be great.
