Greetings folks. I'm a newbie here, but I have experience. The error I recieve is F:\VIDEO_TS/VTS_12_3.VOB: invalid file size. This happens with DVDXcopy plat. at 39% into rip. Clonedvd and anydvd gives error before it can rip. Going to try DVDdecrypter with dvd43 and see what happens any other suggestions.

One up to date ripper will do. Both anydvd and decrypter will rip this without a problem. Just make sure they are the latest versions. You also might want to make sure the disc is clean and free of scratches(buff it out the best you can). Even the slightest mar can effect the ripping process.

I backed up this movie a week and a half ago with decrypter and shrink without a problem.

I agree with "wolfniggr " about issues with a disc with dust - dirt on it. I have have had a RIP or two fail due to this problem.

Just ripped House of Flying Daggers today. It has the latest protection code on it. You will need to use the latest version of DVD Decrypter to rip it.

Thanks, gentlemen! DVD Dycrypter is the one. Used along with shrink as suggested demolished it! I originally had trouble with CONTROL; I thought it was a bad dvd. I let DVD Decrypter out of its cage and it devoured CONTROL. LOL!

I've backed up "HOFD" using 2 different softwares and both are fine. The first one is a Verbatim 2.4X DVD+R DL using InterVideo DVD Copy 3 with DVDIdle Pro 5.8.2 running in the background. The second is a TDK 8X DVD-R using 1Click DVD Copy 4.1 using DVD43 v3.2.5.113. Both completed the job easily and I've tested with both of my Philips and Samsung DVD Players without any freezing. Have fun burning...!!

I have read all the posts regarding this HOFD and although I've tried running the AnyDVD in the background, I still can't get it to go. I narrowed it down to VOB 11.3, the rest is fine. I have the latest DVDDecrypter, I've tried with Shrink, and still nothing. This is the second one that I've tried both at the same place. Any other suggestions you guys could help with?
Thanks,

Never had any problems backing up ANY DVD. Been doing it for over a year now. Always use DVD Shrink. Until HOFD. I can't use Shrink cause I keep getting error. I used Decrypter and reads it & stores it on my hard drive fine but is 8gb of space. How can I back it up now?I don't have a dual layer burner. How do I compress the space to fit on a 4.7 gb blank DVD?

It's most likely a bad disc from scratches or dirt. You can try rinsing with soap and buffing out the smudges, etc. or just get another copy. The problem is the original, not Decrypter.

@breach
Since your have the movie on your HD use Shrink to compress it. Just use the option 'open file' and pick the movie. Remember though it will store the movie to HD but size will be around 4.3gig. So you'll have the same movie 2x on your HD taking up about 12.3 gig. Or if you have Nero you can use Recode which only creates a temp file.

I had the "VTS_12_3.VOB: invalid file size" problem when I tried to burn with Clone DVD (ver 1 not 2). Shifted to DVD Shrink and it worked fine. The latest Decrypter is a must. (Before I upgraded, VTS_11_3.VOB was killing my old Decrypter).

So after I click on 'open file' do I click on the mds file or the bigger file? Then after I click 'open file' do I do 'write' with the blank dvd?

Well, regarding HOFD, I've noticed that all the movies from Sony Pictures, are the one giving us problems. The same happened with "The Forgotten" and "Resident Evil:Apocaplyse". Sony must be using a new copy protection scheme. I used DVDXCopy, never could get it to work. But thanks to you guys, I now can. I really appreciate it.

Just an FYI the new copy protection is called Sony Arccos.
Check out BBMayo's post #6: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/183136
As you can tell they (sony) thought they had the best copy protection.
But hey isn't that these forums are for? Help people in need?

I don't know why some of you have such a hard time backing up HOFD. These latest softwares or version from "DVD43 v3.5.2.113, AnyDVD, DVD Decrypter, DVD Region Free, DVDIdle Pro" should easily completed the job.

I used Decrypter and shrink to analyze it first then shrunk it and it burned nicely.....:)...However I did go into AnyDVD and uncheck annoying trailers and had it go directly to title menu.

I think others may be having the same problem I am having - the new Sony CP stuff hoses my DVD machine.

I normally just use DVDShrink and have no problems. The box is running XP Pro and the drives are a Lite-ON 15x DVD-R and a Plextor 16x DL burner (had the same problem with a 4x TDK +- DVD burner).

I installed DVD43 a while back to get around a couple of problem discs, but normally run with it turned off.

With the new Sony protection I get CRC errors in DVDshrink no matter if DVD43 is installed or not. I alread had decrypter installed but it would not work either. I upgraded to the latest version - still does not work. In fact, with the latest decrypter installed the PC all but locks up when it hits the bad spot on the DVD. The program quits transferring data, but you can't stop or kill the program nor car you reboot. The disc is new and clean and I tried reading in both drives and all drives are on the latest firmware.

Finally last night I installed decrypter on my laptop (older, slower, running win2k, with a 1x or 2x DVD internal drive) and it read the same DVD without any problems! I followed the same method - start the program, insert the disc, select movie only, and rip. On the laptop when it gets to the bad spot (at the start of the movie) it just says "inserting sectors" and goes right on. On the other PC this is where it hoses up.

On my XP DVD box I have tried un-installing DVD43, unloading everything else loaded, etc and still it will not work. I am going to do some more tests, including un-installing decrypter and re-installing to see if I can get it going - and will report back what I find. I have more XP boxes with LiteOn DVD-R drives (but no DVD burners) in them and I plan on trying this disc in those as well.

If anyone else is having the same problem, just try another PC since it worked fine.

So any ideas what else to try on my main DVD box to get this to work?

I tried the same process as you, both on my Dell Laptop and another PC in my home. Still the exact same errors in the same place. My slowest PC is an emachine with a 2.8 P4, 1 Gig of Ram and more than enough disk space running XP Pro w/SP2. Still though, no ideas as to what it can be.

Had you ever put dvd43 on any of them? I wonder if it fails to remove everything when I un-install or close it? Do all your boxes have the same brand of DVD-R in them (mine do) ?

I am wondering if I use the Plextor tools to slow down the read speed on the burner if that would help? My laptop is like a 750mhz PIII or something with 256mb of RAM, but it was able to rip the movie. It had never had any of the DVD tools installed on it before this "Test".

It may be some XP DMA problem or something. I will not know more until I have some time (hopefully tonight) to test some more.
