I did find out in one of the forums that it is important to make sure that the Patin-Couffin is released. DVD Dycrpter, Any-DVD, In-CD, and 43free all have to individually use the Patin-Couffin. Can not use two of these at once. DvD Dycrypter and shirnk works best, second for me is AnyDVD and shrink or Xcopy platinum. I am having problems with 43free and my sonyDRX_720ul, but the other programs are good for me. I noticed that AnyDVD and xcopy burns dvd's the fastest as long as the new Css errors aren't present. If so than just have to pull out the Devastator Destroyer (DVD Decrypter)and its all over. LOL! In task manager -> Processes tab make sure no two processes (example 4 listed above) are running at the same time.

Good Luck!

Thanks for the reply!

I read that the latest version of DVD43 does not require the Patin Couffin engine (of course that may mean it installs it when you install the program?).

I don't use the other 2 programs you mentioned, just DVD-Shrink and decrypter. I don't know that I don't has the ASPI driver on my DVD box. AFAIK I have installed neither on my laptop.

More stuff to check, though - thanks!

I did have the Patin-Couffin on and running, but I had AnyDVD on, and have not tried using DVD43. I will dowload it and try, will post results later.
Thanks for the help.

Based on my experiences, I would not bother - since it does not seem to work on these new Sony discs.

Of course, maybe it does not work on these new discs for the same reason than the decrypter does not work on my machine?

I tried unloading stuff, changing stuff around, still hoses when it hits the bad spot.

This morning while doing something else, the light bulb went on. My box is a Dell "server" that has 3 IDE channels (primary, secondary, and tertiary) with 6 total IDE devices. I have the DVD-R and DVD-RW drives on the 3rd channel. I bet the programs or drivers are having a problem - as long as no errors it works OK, but then there is an error on this "odd" IDE port then my PC hoses.

Tonight I am going to disconnect the hard drives from the 2nd channel and connect the DVD drives to that one. I am thinking that this will let it work - I hope. If so, then I will move the hard drives to the 3rd channel and just leave them there.

Fingers crossed.....

Hi everyone. I have been reading all the threads here and they have been really helpfull. I have had the same problem with two DVD's I encountered and I use CloneDVD2. I tried to follow the gist of the threads so I downloaded Decrypter and Shrink. Decrypter I think worked fine and put the DVD onto my Hard Drive under a drirectory called DVD_Video/Video_TS. Then I used Shrink and that is where I ran into the problem. I want to burn it onto a disc but Shrink wants to put it on my harddrive into the same directory as above. Then it tells me it can not do that which I knew anyone (source and target directories can not be the same). I am lost. Can anyone help me. I have Shrink 3.2. Thanks for the help.

Make a folder - call it \DVD_RAW or something.

Run decrypter on the disc again and poing the output into this folder.

Then run DVDShrink and click on re-author, and click on this folder and select the movie. It will analyze it. Then shrink it as you normally would writing it out to your hard drive (what I do, into a folder called \move_name\) then burn from that - or burn it directly. Whatever you normally do.

This is covered step-by-step here:

It worked!

I connected the DVD drives to the 2nd IDE port and decrypter worked a treat! It pauses at the bad spot, then inserts dummy sectors, and keeps going.

So if the latest decrypter does not work for this movie, then maybe you are trying to use a non-standard IDE port like I was.

Hummmm.... wondering why some people still have issue with HOFD. If only I can do a printscreen and paste it in here, I would, but I've tried and afterdawn.com wouldn't let me paste via reply. So, how do you experts out there did it anyways? I mean I've seen people can post or print the screen in shrink or decrypter and reply it in here. Getting back to the main subject now, I've just backed up another copy (my third copy now) for a friend of mine using the latest version from "SHRINK and DVD Decrypter" and it's fine. There's no special protection about HOFD. Like I've said it before; DVD Decrypter, DVD43, AnyDVD, DVDIdle Pro and Dvd Region Free+CSS will do the job easily. Any of these software running in the background will rip perfectly without any issue.

Don't use AnyDVD (unload it) and grab the latest decrypter and rip it to a file, then Shrink it as normal. If that does not work, then either you have a hardware issue like I did, or your disc is damaged/dirty/scratched.

I got the latest version of DVD Decrypter, hofd seemed to rip just fine (or so was reported by the program). I put it in the default TS_VIDEO folder, tried throwing it in the latest version of Shrink, several things:
- It would load part of the way and then error sometimes, if I'd do it again it would go through. Sometimes it'd give me "programming error, access violation" errors, sometimes it'd give me "Illegal memory access" errors, especially on 11_3 and 12_3.
- The program wouldn't let me take the quality down past 99.4%, so therefore I couldn't get it to fit on a DVD.
- Whenever I would drag the movie into the DVD portion of Re-Authoring, it would load okay and then freeze.
- Whenever the preview window comes up, a lot of the preview is green and artifacted.

Now if it said that the DVD ripped okay, then wtf is the problem? Why would Shrink freeze so readily? Any help would be appreciated.

Insert the disc, then run decrypter. It should report that the disc has protection one it in several places. Click on edit then select "movie only". The choose output in file mode, point it at a blank director, and rip. Right after it starts ripping the movie (maybe 20-30 seconds) the data transfer will pause and the program will sit for a few seconds, then on the log screen it will tell you it is inserting dummy sectors and pick back up.

Once it is done exit decrypter and run shrink. Click on re-author and explore the folder you used for the output of decrypter. Click on the main movie and add. On the compression tab turn off the foreign audio (spanish or french?) and that should now make the movie 100% so it will fit on a 4.6gb blank. Click on backup and away you go.

Make sure you have enough free disk space for the raw rip and the shrink output.

Hi Guys...

Backed up my copy last night. DVD43 does not work. This movie must use a protection scheme similar to spanglish. What happens is it can read the movie in shrink when it is anayizing it up to the point of the actually movie itself. It gets to 35 %, the actually point of the movie and stops. My best guess after about 600 or so burns is that is a new arcoss of some sort. It does the same think resident evil did when that form of arcoss came out. No worries though, the new AnyDVD 5.1 will remove it. I just liked DVD43 becuase it was free but looks like i am buying AnyDVD. Its well worth it and they are always up on these type of things. Good luck.

Have anyone tried playing the HOFD after burning the movie. I updated AnyDVD and it burned without error but the movie would not play. Everything works fine until you try to play the actual movie. It'll go through the the 'Federal Warnings' etc...but then after that it stops and the movie doesn't start. I tried advancing to the next chapter but nothing happens. I've wasted 3 DVDR trying this with various software...Intervideo, CloneDVD, etc... In addition I tried to burn the movie only without success.

I encountered the same problem with Spanglish. Everything looks and plays okay until you actually try to play the movie!

It is OK if you use decrypter and shrink. The bad spot on the disc is right where your copy is hosing. So I assume your program has put something in its place that will not play. You might could play the movie and quickly skip to the next chapter and rewind to get around the spot. Of course, both of the programs you need to make a good copy are free you juse need to download them ......

Still can't do it - or Being Julia, also from Sony. I use an HP box with i200 writer, Home XP system. Normally I use DVD XCopy Xpress - this won't read it but for 10 seconds and then it hangs. So I tried Decrypter, and it ripped the movie, no problem. Then I went to DVD Shrink to compress (Movie Only) for burning, and I get the following message: DVD Shrink encountered an error and cannot continue. Failed to read file C:\DVD Storage\VTS_01_1.VOB Data Error (cyclic redundancy check).
What does this error mean? Is there a way to get around it?
Thanks in advance.

Kblutrei,

Try these steps and see if it helps. According to my understanding, I backed up/burned with "DVD Decrypter" after SHRINK has done compressed.

** go to "My Computer", click on Local C:\Drive [or Hard Drive]
** go to "File", New, then Folder [c:\NEWBackup_Movie] <--this is only an example, you'll have to create a "new folder" for your new backing up movie. After you're done with that close it.
** now OPEN up DVD Decrypter, go to "MODE" select "ISO", then "WRITE W"
** select your "Destination" as your DVD-Burner. Make sure to UNCHECK on "Verify" box, if it is Uncheck already, leave it as is.
**NOTE: make sure you check your settings in "Decrypter" and have I/O Ignore Read Error check and other Remove Protections check in the Settings
** close your DVD Decrypter now
** now insert the "Original Dvd [the one you're going to back up from]" into your DVD-ROM drive, and put a blank DVD-R in your Dvd Burner [make sure to use quality disc such as FUJI, TDK, SONY, MAXWELL,TY & VERBATIM: make sure it says MADE IN JAPAN or SINGAPORE]
** now OPEN "DVD Shrink", click "Edit" then "Preferences" then on "DVD Target size", you can select "DVD5" or "CUSTOM", if you choose CUSTOM make sure to make the size a little less than DVD5 i.e. anything from "4350MB - 4450MB"
** now select "FILE I/O" and check "CHECK RPC2 drive region code" and "Enable overlapped I/O" - this increase ripping performance. Make sure to UNCHECK on "Enable burning with NERO," and "OK". Since we're going to burn from DVD DeCrypter with the capabilities of bypassing any new protection code.
** click on "OPEN DISC", select your DVD-Rom drive (it should pop-up right away) and click "OK", now SHRINK will do a quick ANALYSIS - will take any where from 45 sec - 2 min. depending on your comp. system.
** now if you wish to delete any unwanted stuff i.e. extras, director's documentary, sub titles, other foreign audio/languages, then do so by going to "Re-Author" mode and uncheck anything you don't need. Under "Main Movie" always select "Title 1", click on Title 1 and drag it to the left side under "DVD STRUCTURE" and release it over there. NOTE: by doing this you will have only the main movie. If you want the full movie you'll have to back up in a "FULL DISC" method and not "Re-Author" and somehow try to trim a little of other audios and subtitles.
** click on "Compressing Setting" if you still want to rid of unwanted stuff. I usually keep the AC3 5.1 English. and do "BACK UP"
**now if you need the quality then Check on "Perform Deep Analysis" and "Compress the video with high quality adapter error compensation", if you want it to rip/burn fast then just simply "Uncheck" them.
** now under "Target Device" go to "Select Back Up Target" and then select "ISO Image File and burn with DVD DeCrypter"
** now on "Select Target Image File" click on "BROWSE" untill you find the "NEW FOLDER" that you created in the very begining under your c:\drive or Hard drive earlier [c:\NEWBackup_Movie] and Open/Save it. Finally, click on "OK", now DVD SHRINK will compress and DVD Decrypter will burn into your dvd burner.
** now that you're done with the hard part, go watch something like a movie on your tv and check back on your comp like 30 -40 mins later. I suggest don't use the Internet while you're performing a back up.

Hopefully, this will give you some clue.

Kblutrei:

I got the exact same error you were talking about, so I wondered aloud if there existed a guide for doing this. However, it is easy:

Once you decrypt the DVD and save it to a folder in your directory, go to >file>open disk image under DVD Shrink. Once you do that, browse for the .mds file in the folder in which you saved the decrpted files and highlight it. Click open, and DVD Shrink will launch its analysis. This works. If you just try to "open files" under the menu, you'll continuously get that error.

Good luck.
