So I woke up one day and found that i had been banned from a regular channel that i had frequented for quite a while. It says 'this address has been banned'. I don't think I did anything improper. Is it possible that somebody logged on with my name and caused problems and that my name (and therefore my IP address) was banned?

Do the bans lift after a while or am I permanently banned? How do I contact the people who banned me to find out what happened? Thanks for any help

Are bans, set for a certain period time or all bans permanent? If they are time set, what are the increments. I have no idea since I've never been an op.

a Ban can be permantly set too. There KLine or GLine bans I believe.. IRCCops and Ops can also ban your IP block/ISP so that anyone using your ISP is also banned from that given channel whether they did anything or not. Thats an extermly rare and last resort tactic but it can happen.

anyway, your banned from the channel itself and not the server correct? I'd check the server's MOTD (message of the day) notice and look for the name of the Server/Network's admin and contact the admin. Dont demand you be unbanned or piss and moan why am I banned blahbleh, all that'll do is annoyn em. ask for a reason why you were banned, for how long is the ban and what can you do to avoid being banned again.

you could have broken a channel rule without knowing and been banned or you could have one of those irc spam viruses that passes out porn links and you were banned to protect other people. these viruses are a real bastard to detect (dont even bother trying norton) and you wont know you have one unless somebody informs you that you are sending out messages.

your best idea is to go on the same irc network and pm an op of the channel your banned from to ask to become unbanned or if the channel has a website you could try emailing them.
