varanus87,

Since it burns dvd+rw's ok, it should burn dvd+r's. Useing that proggy I gave yo the link to in a previous post show us the brand and media code of the dvd+r discs you have tried. Example:

Staples = MBIPG101
Sony = RICOHJPNR01
Maxell = YUDEN000T01

These are only examples and probably don't pertain to your situation. Let us know what your media codes are.

It's fixed. I don't know what the hell I did, but I think it may have been a firmware issue.

Juan: I have made a lot of changes before burning a dvd again, but this is the last thing that I did. Go to this site:
http://www.toshiba-europe.com/storage/Index.asp?page=PDM&nav=RSC_PDL&stype=product&ptype=&frame=content&model=SDR5372&slang=EN
Download the Drivers and Firmware updates. Hope this helps.

I knew it wasn't a media problem or burner problem, but I also understand that you needed to be sure because I know how hard it is to fix a problem that you can't see for yourself.

Thank you for the help everyone! God bless!

mrjuan,

Don't use the firmware update for the toshiba. You need to locate a firmware update web page for your phillips and then download and flash your drive with the latest update for it. Try googling for the website.

Sorry, Juan. I didn't know that the firmware was specific to the drive. But I do think a firmware update is your best bet. Good Luck!

well everybody, the strangest thing happened, i reformatted my harddrive, and then tried to burn a slideshow and ofcourse it failed on both programs that i used. so i figured it couldn't be a hardware or software conflict, so i just figured my burner had gone bad. so just for the sake of argument, i went out and brought some sony dvd+r's ( mind you now that I have been using memorex dvd+r's since i've had the computer, and they have worked fine all this time) anyway I tried burning a slideshow with the sony dvd+r and it burned with no problem, figure that. so I tried another program that i used just to be sure, and it also burned fine. I just can't explain it. well thanks anyway to all who tried to help.

Hi mrjuan,
Glad to see you're up n burnin. If we would have known you were useing memorex media we probably could have solved your issues long ago. Memorex media is seldom recommended and usually discouraged by most. It is very inconsistant and causes more problems than any other media I know of. Stay with the good stuff (and away from memorex and retail store brand name media) and you shouldn't have any problems.

Two problems now. I burned quite a few dvds until I ran out any my trial for the program expired. By the time I renewed my trial and got new dvds, I noticed that my computer has been having problems staying alive. The blue screen of death always came up when I opened a certain program, so I uninstalled it. Then it started to come up when I had too many folders open. My computer is one big freezy mess. Even typing up this message causes it to freeze, and I have to wait about 15 seconds to see what I just typed. Anyway, I noticed that the blue screen of death told me to update my BIOS. First of all, what is a BIOS and how do you update it? Second of all, I have the same problems that I had before, but I'm not sure how I fixed it the first time, so I need your help for that. It took me about 24 hours to defrag my hard drive, and that didn't help. It also took me 24 hours to copy a dvd just to find out that it can't burn onto a dvd for one reason or another. I tried the firmware thing, but no luck.

One step at a time, right? Does anyone know how to update the BIOS, and can someone give me a program name or websote to go to for one?

Thanks for the help so far and thanks in advance.

i think for this we need the EXACT message from screen. I think it's usually the first 2 or 3 or so msgs on a blue screen of death that are important (but hey i can't remember the last time i saw a bsod)

Hmmm...I'm not exactly sure why or when the blue screen of death comes up, because I tried to open up multiple folers and now it just freezes. Is there a file that has the message on it so I wouldn't have to make the bsod appear? If defragging can't help my computer speed up, it must have something to do with this BIOS. I tried to google it, but couldn't find much about it.

that doesn't make sense. Are you sure you're talking about a 'real' blue screen of death ?. Plus i don't understand all this talk about bios. What i'm trying to say is i can't visualise what you can see, or if you're explaining it correctly

did you install any programs or hardware since the last time you successfully burned? There might be a software conflict. Doubt it's BIOS related. How much free HD space do you have? Check for viruses too.

On the other thread you posted at digital digest

http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?s=ed1dc68889a7f6cc...

They asked you what message you received because it was doubtful that this was bios related, as squizzle stated. Try defragging as suggested, or do a system restore.

I tried defragging, and used a program called adaware to remove viruses. I am sure that it was a blue screen of death; it said that it did the physical memory dump and the whole shmeer. Sorry, creaky, but I don't understand the BIOS thing either. There may be a software conflict; the two times that dvd burning hasn't worked (this time and last time) I hadn't been burning DVDs for a while and my kids may have installed/downloaded conflicting programs. They are on the computer so much that I can't really pinpoint the program, if that is even the issue.

Ad-Aware does not remove viruses only spyware, you need virus program such as Norton or Macafee. Have you tried doing a system restore back to a point before you had troubles? Also, you might want to go to the Microsoft Windows site and check out your error.

Adaware is for removing adware/spyware. It won't take care of viruses or worms. You will need some anti-virus software like Norton or McAfee but if you didn't already have some sort of virus protection it may be too late.

Your bios may be updateable but I seriously doubt that is causing the bsod.

your system bios are basically kinda like firmware, but for your motherboard. however, you seem to be having some serious problems with your computer, so i doubt flashing new bios to your computer will help much. personally, i would just back up any data you want to save (making sure to grab My Documents, cuz it's easy to forget to backup) and just reformat and do a fresh install of windows. whenever you crash, there's a chance that any files that are being accessed at the time (and windows does a LOT of stuff in the background) will get errors from not closing properly or whatever, so everytime you crash, you mess things up a little bit more. eventually it gets to the point where it's so unstable that the only option, that i know of, is to simply do a nice fresh install of windows.

i dunno, just what i would do. oh, and it's a good idea to make a list of programs you have installed, and make sure you know where to get drivers for all your hardware, because otherwise it can be a bit difficult to get things up and running the way you like it again.

oh, and you have to go to the manufacturer site of your motherboard to download the appropriate bios, and you need to know the model and such as well. can be difficult if you didn't build your computer yourself.
