Some weeks ago I posted a similar problem in the dvd-authoring forum.
Equipment:
(1)Burners DL
NEC 3520, Plextor 716 UF on 1394
(2) Discs DL
Traxdata DL, Philips, Memorex
speed set at 2.4X and 4X
(3) S/W
Nero 6.6.12.a, DVD Decrypter
(4) Stand alone players
Dennon, Philips
Results:
(1) Using Nero the DL disks failed to write or unplayable on stand alone machines )Sometimes it plays to one and not to the other).
(2) DVD Decrypter burning ISO image produced problematic disxs (skipping chapters and freezes).
Decision:
Stick to SS/SL Philips 8X discs and Plextor 708A SL burner.
Does anybody has a better suggestion in burning those @#$%%^&* discs?

Oracle,
have you tried Verbatim DL discs and burn at 2.4 speed using decrypter (set to ISO read) and Nero to write/burn compilation?
I have tried a number of methods but this (above) seems to work fairly well. Other DL discs I have used have not been quite so successful. Alsom, since I swithed to Verbatim and use this method, they play in a variety of DVD players.

hey guys, just wanted to give you my experience with DL.
i used DVD Decrypter read and write in ISO mode using verbatim DL media.. i have a liteon drive, i think its the 1673...
anyway, burned heat and incredibles
both would not play on my old panasonic s55.
both did play on my new zenith dvb 318..
incredibles worked flawlessly, and heat skipped a couple of times on the last chapter before the layer change, but no other problems...
all you need is decrypter...

Oracle,
are you using "region-free" or "dvd43" in the backgound. DVD-Decrypter doesn't like this type of region-free software. It should/must be disbled when using decrypter otherwise it can cause errors. With decrpter, you don't need the background region-free progs anyway.

I don't use any of those background programs (those that have been mentioned in the prebius message included any dvd as well).
The usual procedure is:
(1) transfet the files into HD (ifo mode for decrypter)
(2) isolate or not thr main stream
(3) eliminating region free if is in use
(4) remove pop ups (restore the ability to navigate through streams and change subtitles, audio streams during playing)
(5) Correct VOB navigation packs (while the new projects is not an iso image)
But iso image writting (iso mode for decrypter) produces unwanted resulys such as freezes and chapter skipping.
Please advise because those @#!^(&% DL discs cost as much a dozen of the SL one's

Dear Travis,
The only app I trust to burn the DLs is DVD Decrypter. You may even use Decrypter to check the www for firmware for your drive. It is most important to have correct firmware. I have used 321 software- it is a waste of $. DVD Decrypter has their own ww site. Dvv Shrink is an excellent app- it does not deal with Sony/Col Across corrupt directory structure.
That said I get my DVD+DL from Sams Club they have then as a 9 pack for $ 47.00 - Verbatim media. Nero 6.6.x is superb- anyone with a dvd burner should have this. So far I have burnt 14 +DLs with Decrypter with 100% success.
And be certain to defrag your hard drive- I do not allow any Microsoft DVD player on my machine- the reasons are many and are the same as why not to install the Interactual player that some offer.

When I try to burn an image to a DVD+R DL disc using DVD Decrypter 3.5.4.0, right when it starts I get an error message that says:

Does anyone know what this means and what the problem is?

Hi Cecilia.....i was reading your entry..and it sounds like you have much knowledge about the burning of DVD DLs with a DVD DL burner..In your entry you mentioned a procedure when you first rip/backup a DVD9. And then continued to describe the technique of making another DVD9 (DL). Now here's my problem...my grand children bought me a DVD DL burner which they had install on my very new HP computer (XP). Since that time i have wasted about 4 DVD DL disks....But my project was to compress all three of the Godfather DVDs onto my hard drive and then tried to burn a DVD DL...
I used a program Showbiz DVD2, also DVD-Lab Pro, and Copy To DVD...always with failure....can you or someone please advise what i can do????.....Even CompUSA or BestBuy have little or no knowledge about this subject...i was willing to have someone from these companies come to my home ($200) and install or demontrate for this old man....At my age now (73) i'm spending my children money....so they'll be less for them.....thanks to anyone.......tom

The 3 movies of Godfather are very large, and you will be doing an awful lot of compression even with a dual layer disk. Rip your files with DVD Decrypter to your hard drive then you will have to use Shrink to join and compress your movies. You will also have to use the reauthor mode which means you will lose your menus. It would really be better if you just made 1.1 copies of each movie so you can retain everything.
Here is a guide on using Shrink to join movies.

Hi Arniebear.....thank you so much for you prompt response....my skills with burning DVD5 is quite extensive. I can get 6 hours of movies (about 3 movies) on a DVD5 with about the quality of a VHS. The technique i use involves DVD Shrink, DGIndex (which produces d2v file), then VFAPIConvEn.exe (which converts d2v to a pseudo avi file), the Mainconcept (which concerts avi to mpv).then DoPullDown (which converts mpv to m2v).After doing this for each of the three movies, I finally use TMPGEncDVDAuthoring program to author and burn.
What similar technique can be used to put all 3 movies on a DVD DL which then would have a better quality....Please advise......tom

Ulysses, I think I can answer your question.
I found out that if you burn a disc using dvddecrypter, and you dont set the booktyping, it by default will produce a disc that plays on a computer, but has limited or no playability on conventional dvd players.
By default, it chooses to label a disc as "dvd+R" or "dvd-r", what you want is to label it "dvd-rom", to ensure compatibility.
Here is how you do it using dvddecrypter 3.5.4:
1. When you are in the "ISO Write" mode, look in the bottom right corner of the window. You should see a drop-down menu for write speed.
2. Next to that is a folder-icon, click it, and it opens up the "booktyping" menu.
3. Click the tab suitable for your burner. In your case, ulysses, it will be "lite-on".
4. In the "Change For" drop down menu, choose the appropriate option (whatever media you are trying to burn).
5. Then, use the "New Setting" menu, select "DVD-ROM", and press "Change".
6. Press the "OK" button.
7. Burn your image. Should have compatibility with everything now.

Hi Guys,
Even I have the same problem - I rip my DVDs using DVD Decrypter in "File" mode. Then use Nero to burn the ripped files on the blank disk(s).
Recently I bought a new laptop "Acer Aspire 5002WLMi". I burned my first DVD+R DL disk with it (using Nero 6.6)and with no success. The disk is playable in all the laptops (tried on 2 different models) and none in standalone DVD Players or the desktop PCs....
Can someone put some light on this.... thanks really appreciate your help here....

@qid
Why not just rip your DVD in Decrypter using iso read and then write mode, this is how I do my dual layer backups.

Well in my experience I have liked Memorex (4.7 GB) disks a lot. Never had problem with it. Hence based on the experience I bought DL of the same brand... & I'm pretty sure that it is not the media but something with the approach that I have tried to burn the DL and it is not working on standalone DVD players....
