Once upon a time I was doing flawless backups but in the past few weeks something has changed and I cannot figure it out. So far The Manchurian Candidate, Bourne Supremacy, Woman, Thou Art Loosed and Quigley Down Under are all skipping when the DVD starts and in the case of The Manchurian Candidate also towards the end of the movie. For Quigley there are a few different scenes that skip and are pixelated. I've used both DVD Shrink and DVD Decryptor's latest versions as well as Elby's CloneDVD. I have used both my Ritek DVD -R media which has provided flawless burns and my newer Taiyo Yuden DVD -R media. I have ensured I had the latest firmware for both of my DVD burners. I have adjusted the burn speed from 4.x to 2.x.

When I play these movies on my computer they work fine. When I play them in my main DVD player, a Samsung, they skip at the aformentioned parts. When I put them in my son's cheapo Symphonic DVD player they seemed to work fine. This is maddening because my backups were working fine two weeks ago with no skipping or pixelation. Also, when I had a friend try some in her brand new Sanyo DVD player they skipped as well.

I am at wit's end trying to figure out what could have happend that certain DVD players are now having a problem reading my burns. Any ideas out there Afterdawn crew!!??

Sounds like a compatibility issue. Do your older burns that didn's skip before skip now? Is this a new batch of media?

When I first started burning DVDs, my player would play everything. Then one day it decided it didn't want to play any burns. I'd have to trick it, eject the tray, then power off and power on right away, stuff like that. Then one day about a month later it decided it would play them again. All of them. That was about a year ago and I haven't had a problem since. Weird....

If you do buy a new player, I hear the el cheapos will play a tortilla if you could get it in there (in Nephilim's words). Bring one or two burns into the store and make sure they play before you purchase.

Squizzle thanks for the (only) reply. :) I think I read where you said that you had an issue with your DVD player in an older post or perhaps that wasn't you.

Yes, the media is new however with my tried and true Ritek it's doing the same thing at the exact same spots. I don't think it's doing it with my old burns but I am going to test that out this weekend.

The thing I don't understand is why always the same problem in the beginning of movies? I would think the compatability issue would be evident in other areas of the movie at random times not always the same spot no matter what media it's burned to or what program is used. *sigh*

it's tough to say what exactly will happen with media and players. Usually if there is a problem, it will show up towards the end of the disc (movie). If they play fine in some players and not in others, that leads me to believe it's compatibility.

You could try using different programs to burn/encode/rip. It might solve your problem.

Not true! As Panzer explained before, the burns work on some players. This is not a computer hardware issue.

PanzerIV,

Have you checked for your dvd player's playback media compatibility? It would be nice if some the experts in this forum know what model/brand burner you have - this, will at least point to other individual whom had previous similar issue can help you to resolved your problem.

If your dvd burner has the latest firmware updated and you're using the top media to back up and still having skip/pixel issue afterall. Then the only possibility I could think of is your "stand alone dvd player", how old is your Samsung dvd player? I, myself, owned a Samsung dvd player and luckily I've successfully playing all my backed up movies without a glitch. Yes... I did used Shrink and Decrypter, and every back up seems to work fine with both my Philips and Samsung. My other suggestion is to try with the dvd+R media, or at least try to back up one with higher speed i.e 6X, 8X and see what's the result. Perhaps, try to upgrade the firmware for your stand alone dvd player, if there is any. By the way, what's the model on your Samsung?

WARNING: Do not "update/upgrade" your SAMSUNG BD-D5XXX series (Bluray Player), or else you cant enjoy any of your movie files.

As alkohol suggested, looks like a firmware issue on the Samsung.

Have a look here for compatibility ratings http://www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers

And also worth a visit to http://product.samsung.com/cgi-bin/nabc/support/b2c_support_search.jsp?eUser=

Locate your player and see if there is a firmware update available for your model.
