I'm wandering what did you all burn at when the fastest speed discs were 4x only...now the media allows you to burn at 16x speed if you choose but people burn at 4x..what did you all burn at when there were only 4x discs out???

I never burn at any speed over 2.4x and have 99% accuracy. Its been my understanding that faster speeds could compromise the quality of the recording. Either way my burns only take 15-20 minutes and its not worth trying to speed things up.

Hey,

I burn my movies at 4x and have never had any problems. Although I have burned a couple times at 8x when the media is 4x, with no problems. It's depends on which media you use, if you use some cheap brand burn slow just to make sure, but if its quality media you can burn at 4x with no problem usually.

I've traditionally burned at 4X but with the current state of the RiDATAs I've been getting I've knocked it back to 2.4X :)

That's not a good sign.............swap to Recordnow........LOL.....

I remember the good old days (care to join me Neph, down memory lane..LOL)

With my Pioneer 103 1x burner and Eperformance 1x blank dvds, Dvd Decrypter/Smart ripper, Ifoedit, CCE, TMPGenc, Dupedvd, Nero 5.5.9.17
Many hours were spent finalising my process............and then it always failed.........LMAO................

4x is the 'norm' irrespective of if you have a 16x burner, others boast to have solid burns at 'warp' speed, however for the sake of 15 mins to burn, it gives me the ideal opportunity to have a horlicks and maybe do a little knitting...................

I always stay one step behind technology if I can, because the market is demanding everything to be faster, and when it gets faster, I like to know that the 'faster' things have been 'road tested', before I jump on the train...............Reliability and good quality is my goal.........

I use 4x discs at the mo', however I am finding it more difficult to obtain them, so I shall be testing some 8x discs in the near future, but leaving the burn at 4x for now.....................

I burn at 4x because I know that I won't have errors. I have been using 4x TY's and just ordered 100 more from supermediastore. My old burner won't burn faster than 4x but my two new burners are 16x, the few disks I burned at 8x with TY's and TDK have come out fine, but I still feel 4x is better it takes 8 mins at 8x but I do not think the extra 7 mins it takes at 4x is not all that painful.

Taking the more unpopular side, after testing my burns at different speeds, I've found, in my case with my burner and my media, that when using Sony DVD-R, (SONY08D1), the 8X burn speed yielded the best results, Quality Scores and PI results, using Nero's Disk Quality Test. The 16X speed is not necessary because, at least in my burners case, it starts out at 8X then moves to 16X and the finish time is in the 5-6 minute range when the 8X is within an approximate 7-8 minute range.

I can swear that I have NEVER had a coaster and the disks are flawless. I also burn ?movie only? using AnyDVD in the background and Nero Recode2.

Asus DRW-1604P Burner, (actually has NEC 3520 chip)
Sony DVD-R 8X, (SONY08D1)
Sony DVD+R 8X, (SONY D11)

bbmayo I believe also burns at 8X for the most part with great results.

Speaking of Prassi products have you tried their new app called 'ONES'? I've been testing it for a week or two and it's a definite winner! It's RecordNow on steroids plus it's an absolute bargain at just a hair over $20 USD. I'll be buying it when my trial is up :)

I had problems with RecordNow, so I use Nero now.

I've always burned at 4x with 4x media, just recently hacked the firmware on the burner so now it burns +R at 8x, which I tried on some Fujifilm 8x media, all came out good but only used 10 discs. Burn speed didn't actually get to 8x until about halfway through the burn and buffers were full the entire time, I wonder what that's all about.... Also some of the discs were darker purple around the center after burns, but they all play fine. I think it depends on your computer setup and the media quality mostly.

i always use 4x out of habit, on my 8x Verb datalifeplus. Nice and predictable 15mins for each burn. Just for a laugh i tried 2 at 8x. both gave me problems. Quote from my problem with these 2 discs from http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/180217 -
Quote:
I was copying a bootable Solaris DVD for work, last night, so i copied the original as a Nero img file under 4GB or something. This copied to hard disc perfectly. Next i used dvdinfopro (free trial) to run a CRC check on the disc i copied from (Mirror Platinum 4x or smiliar). This CRC check passed with flying colours.
I thought this would be a good excuse to use my Verb's at their rated 8x for the first time. The first burn failed at writing the lead-in stage, well it took 8mins to be still writing the lead-in so i canned it. I used another Verbatim, again at 8x. This one worked 100% in the burn process. Next i used this Verbatim disc to rip another disc image FROM, now Nero complained near the beginning of rip with a couple of read errors. So i CRC checked it and as suspected - CRC errors near start of disc.
Next i used another Verbatim 8x, but this time at my normal habit of 4x. CRC checked the disc - 100% fine. Used this disc to copy another image FROM. 100& successful. Wrote this image to another Verbatim at 4x again. CRC checked 100%.

So even on this v good media on a fast up to date PC, my 8x media was error'ing out unless i used 4x. Now here i must add that i have burnt probably 300 movies on these 8x Verb's, at 4x only without one single burn error or playback error and have CRC checked a fair few 100% also.
At the time i posted the above, i was on half a gig of RAM, i didn't check at the time but i suspect i was low on memory at the time. Spose i could check back in the Nero history logfile sometime, but i now have gig of RAM so guess i could try some more at 8x. My system /setup is well up to spec so can't think what else it could have been... If half a dozen work 100% with zero crc checks i will stick to 8x, but if only one fails, i will revert to 4x. Then when i start buying 16x media, no doubt the same niggles will remain, even after some experimenting... :)

Well Im burning at 4x right now but I cant burn at less speed because the burner does not give me the option (Sony Dru 710a) Im expecting an answer from sony soon to why my burner cant burn at less than 4x, about quality no coaster yet at 4x, even if the disc can burn at 8x or 16x I always prefer to burn at 4x, you can burn a complete DVD-R in 15 minutes, the problem is that my friends DVD drive is not 100% compatible to disc that are burned at 8x so just to make sure the disc will work I burned at 4x(I also do this when I burn PS2 backups)
