Tmpgenc audio format conversion

I have a video file that I want tmpgenc to convert. The video is no problem but the audio seems to be at issue.

When I try to run tmpgenc, I get "this audio's not in the correct format, you need mp3, or linear PCM"

I stripped the audio using Virtualdub. I think it stripped it into linear PCM, becaus when I load it into CoolEdit, cool thinks it's PCM. But tmpgenc won't understand it.

I've used Cool to change it into every format understood by cool, including MP3, mono PCM, stereo PCM, but Tmpgenc won't accept the audio.

Any hints/suggestions/leads/faqs/ or otherwise flames I should read or understand?
