Most likely the media won't burn slower than that.

What is the brand and media code of the discs being used?

Well its been with 2 different brands. Taio Yuden (sp?) 8X and Memorex 8X.

If the specs on the drive for DVD writing start at 8x, does that mean slower burning isn't supported?

Have you tried using the Nero Info Tool to check out what your disk write speeds are, and what your drive supports?

I'll try that. but when I ordered it offline I remember the lowest speed shown in the specs for writing DVD-R was 8x.

maybe your burner's firmware is out of date, and can't determine the write speeds correctly ?

If that's the slowest your burner will burn, then that's the slowest your burner will burn.
