I a Sony DRX 710ul USB dual layer drive. I back up 4.7gb dvds fine, but I have gone through 6 Verbatim dual layer dvds. I have upgraded the software and firmware for the Sony drive to the latest possible softwares. I have upgraded to Nero 6.6.0.12 and Recode 2 2.2.6.16. I did try and use one click dvd copy and in Nero I copy the dvd files first to the hard drive then used nero to copy to the dual layer.

I have been trying to back up the Incredibles and I get burn complete but it cannot be played in any dvd player (sony, toshiba, and PS2) and my PC's will not recognize the dual layers I have completed. Sony says that the drive will not burn dvds with my notebook because it is 1.5 mhz processor and it needs a 1.6 processor. If that was so it would just take forever to burn or decode the files. So I need help because I have a dual layer drive and I can't do blank dual layers.

Please help

thanks in advance

Hi there,

You did not mention at what speed you were burning those.

I suggest burning to the lowest speed and see if this helps.

You also mentioned your drive is a USB, I know some other users had USB / Laptops problems. But you can do single layer, so that's bizarre.

I have not even tryed 1 Dual Layer yet, since it's still pretty new and VERY expensive.

Making a few coasters that costs me $0.38 I can live with.
Making 2 or 3 coasters at $10.00 a pop, now that's a different story :)

Keep us posted...

well I was burning at 2.4x with Nero but with One click DVD copy it determined I can go 4.0x so it did. Both completed but still the same result I even tried Ocean Twelve and same result. It's bizarre!! Even on Sony's FAQ's it says dual layers will not play in DVD players. I called them and all they said was it's your processor speed that's just an excuse to say I DON'T FRICKIN KNOW.

Someone else has have these happening to them

That's what it sounds like to me too. I used to use a 600MHz laptop to burn for months and didn't have a problem, also was using a USB burner. It just took forever.

Have you tried DVD Decrypter? Just go Mode/ISO Read, rip movie. Mode/ISO Write, burn disc. They should've come out with DVD+RW DL that way people aren't wasting money on coasters.

I will go ahead and try DVD Decrypter as soon as I can get more of the expensive potential coasters at best buy.

Thanks

slanteye,

Perhaps, you may want to post your Nero error's log, wait and see if others can help to solve your issue for you. Are you sure it's a successfully completed? Any success backed up should be able to play on your computer, even if it can't play on your stand alone dvd player. Just so you know "The Incredibles and Ocean's 12 have some kind of code protections. However, if you're using the latest from DVD Decrypter, DVD43 or AnyDVD, then you should be fine.

I don't know why you need to copy it to your HD in the first place, since you already had a VERBATIM 2.4X DVD+R DL disc on hand. I mean it's good to do so and it's probably a little safe that way, which it is obvious for some people. However, I, on the other hand, if I have a DL media ready to back up any decent movie, I would just burn it on the fly (click on burn, meaning no need to compress at all) using either DVD Decrypter (latest version) or Dvd Copy 3. I've had my SONY DRU 710A byx4 dual layer for 6 months and I've burned at least 10 Verbatim DVD+R DL and it has been successfully so far. On top of that, I've test both of my Philips and Samsung stand alone dvd players and they both played flawlessly. It played smoothly on my version 9 PS2 US model without any freezing at all.

Have you upgraded your burner's firmware lately by chance? If not, it would be nice to do so. The choice is yours.

WARNING: Do not "update/upgrade" your SAMSUNG BD-D5XXX series (Bluray Player), or else you cant enjoy any of your movie files.

ok I will try and use DVD Shrink with the latest version on AnyDVD. Do I have to choose any special options in DVD Shrink as far as Book Type? Because I did so in Nero Recode2 obviously it didn't work or I wouldn't have started this thread. Thank you all for the info I will try and do it this weekend.

It might help with compatibility if you can do this.

Why not just try DVD Decrypter? DVD Shrink will not burn and you have to change some things so it won't compress. DVD Decrypter is a more powerful ripper, and will probably give you less problems than DVD Shrink if you're not compressing. I'd try that first.

Hi Rotary,

Based on your suggestion, to open the .MDS instead of the .ISO
I tryed to open the .MDS with Nero but it didn't recognized it.

Daemon Tools was able to load the .MDS to play on the PC !

Just burning the Dual Layer .ISO with Nero should still work fine ? !

I will by Dual Layer media soon to try a few, but at $10.00 Canadian each I will not make 10 coasters just for testing :)

Hey,

I don't know if this helps u at all but I burned Ocean's 12 with only DVD Decrypter and Nero. I have not tried with the dual layer discs but i have a dual layer sony burner. I used dvd-r and had no problems. I used DVD Decrypter without changeing any settings then used Nero recode. You should try not using DVD-DL because there is not much quality lost in this movie. I am using a 1.4Ghz overclocked to 1.6(around there). you should try pluging your stuff into someones computer that is faster to see if it works.

ok so what's the final say for doing Dual layers?? USING DVD Decrypter or DVD Shrink???

About using my dvd recorder on someone else's PC good idea but I don't think it's the speed because then I couldn't do single layer dvds.

either should work, but DVD Decrypter should be easier. Mode/ISO Read, Mode/ISO Write and burn MDS file.

I have a pioneer 109(intrnal IDE) Nero 6.6.08 and have used AnyDVD DVD Decrypter as well as DVD Shrink to do dual layer videos. I have used dvd+r Dual for both backup dvds as well as edited dvds from min dv tape
The results have been very diverse ( ie plays on a pc not on a domestic dvd player and vice versa or only one layer plays or the dics is a coaster) . Even the Home made DVDs with menus made with Ulead DVD workshop2 are NOT guaranteed to play on any one medium. I feel that there is too much of hit and miss involved with the dual layer media for video (Not data ) that I will stick to the cheap and almost universally compatible single layer discs for now given that they are more than 200% cheaper and the quality is still quite good
Even for data storage although I have had no problems I still make 2 copies of any crictical data
