I have the NEC 3500AG and I use DVDShrink/Nero.

The first set of movies/dvds I burnt were Master and Commander, The Thing and Stir of Echoes. That was followed by titles such as Bum Fights, Football Factory and Scraps. Using Taiyo Yuden and Phillips DVD+Rs with the booktype set to DVD-ROM, I was able to burn and successfully play in my 6 yr old set top (Toshiba 3109). DVD-Rs do not work in this player.

Recently, I tried burning Behind Enemy Lines and Memento using the same procedure as before. But they wont play in my set top. I keep getting "disc error". I reburnt the first set of movies that worked before and they work again. I tried reburning the other movies and they did not work.

Before the issues started I had reinstalled the firmware on my secondary dvd drive and reinstalled my Nvidia ATA drivers (because after removing them I kept getting ata controller/cd rom found message everytime I booted). BUt I dont think this is the cause as new rip/burns of the first three movies (plus the older copies) still work in my set top. The originals also play in the set top.

I tried ripping with Decrypter to ISO and burning, tried Nero with UDF/ISO mode and forced DVD Video compatibility mode, nothing works. I am at a loss here. Is it possible that my set top just does not agree with certain movies that are burnt?? Is there some way to hack an .IFO file or something to get these movies to play??
I cannot think of any reason why some movies work and others dont.

I hope someone here can shed some light on this issue. I was initially happy that I would not have been forced to shell out for a new player but it looks like that's the only answer.

EDIT : All movies /burns mentioned here play just fine in my computer and on my roommate's set top player.

you just have a compatibility issue. You can try different media until you find some that works, you can get a different standalone player, I hear the el cheapo players will play anything you throw at 'em. If you get a new player, bring some burned movies into the store and try em out in different players till you find one they work in.

Thanks for the response... but if it's simply a compatibility issue, wouldnt none of the burnt movies work?? Why do only certain movies work??? What is it that differentiates the movies that do work from the ones that dont if they are all basically broken down to the same type of files??

a logical answer would be the manufacturer of the media. If you are using store-bought media then there could be a handful of different manufacturers' media in the same spindle (especially Memorex, stay away from them). There's a program called DVD Identifier that tells you who actually made your media. It can be found through a Google search. Poor quality media won't have good playback results.

My DVD player is weird with dvdr media, At first it would play mostly anything, then one day it stopped playing all my burned discs. After fighting with it for a couple of months, one day it decided it would play everything again. Since then I haven't had a problem.

Rule of thumb is the older the player, the more likely it is that you'll have compatibility issues.

The media I am using are Taiyo Yuden DVD+R and Phillips DVD+R.
I already use DVDIdentifier and all the discs from the respective batches match each other.
At this point in time I am almost convinced it is an issue with the player since the burnt discs all play in my roommate's player and his PS2.
It is just weird and confusing that certain movies always play... that stubborn streak in me just wants an explanation I guess.

I don't know for a fact since I don't have one but I've read that NEC's perform better with -r media and -r media is more compatable than +r media (unles the +r is booktyped dvd-rom) with set-top players on average. You can flash your NEC with some modified (hacked) firmware to enable it to booktype +r/rw media dvd-rom thus making them much more compatable.

Mort81.. thanks for your input.. I am setting the booktype to dvd-rom.
My set top - toshiba 3109 has refused any dvd-r so far, but then again I have not used any high grade dvd-r , just the prodiscs that my roommate has.
Time to swallow my pride and get a new player I guess. I just did not want to settle for an Apex or Cyberhome or similar type. I wanted to save up for a player in the 150.00 range.
