Hey, im looking into getting a comp for my brother and hes a massive gamer... I was wondering if any of you have alienware and how you like it. Hes thought of building his own but hes a lazy bastard :P Ive seen a notebook called Area-51m 7700 and it looks to have nice specs...

If he were to get that laptop though, he would get it off ebay because I hear Alienware is insanely pricey...we live in Canada and I configured its specs and it was something like $6000 with shipping ect.
So anyways my main question is how you guys feel for Alienware and possibly this laptop... Thanks

look i guess an alienware are good yeah ive tried them. I ordered a system but it cost a huge amount as you said. I built my own for a fraction of the price i would reccomend doing that mate. Check out my specs on my sig. If your going for the gaming route make sure you GET PCI - Express for the graphics itll do wonders for games.

my specs all in have cost me about $1200 all in and PCI Express is a new thing its much faster than AGP but on Intel mobos support it at current i think but i may be wrong PCI Express is twice the speed of AGP at least so it would help to have it and would make it kind of future ready if you will.
You can identify a PCI Express card usually by it having PCX in the name for example Nvidia Geforce 6800GT PCX

ok, but the thing is he wants a laptop because here in Canada, he has started taking a coarse in Game Delveloping & Design in Toronto, and he needs it to be powerful enuf for the latest games as well as portable... lol i think i should have said this in the beginning... :P

also, i see alot of alienware on ebay, going for around $800 US, some i understand are scams but some are actually true

yeah alienware make v good systems but for the money they are over priced
im studyin 3D animation and game design at University, i did look into buying an alienware machine but there just mad on prices
if you need a laptop then the main problem your going to have is upgrade ability in the future, graphics cards etc arent going to be able to be changed
plus if he is doing work with games as I do then rendering times on animations for games are very processor intensive and a laptop while plugged in to a wall is fine, it wont last long on batteries
so you need a decent processor, anything above 2.6 is fine for now but id aim for over 3 ghz. u will need AT LEAST 512 mb of ram, 1GB would be better. and for the graphics card id go for a 256mb to save upgrading for a while. a large ish hdd is also needed coz the files can get huge

I got one and sent it back. It was a nice lappy. but damn thing was 13 lbs!!!! and if only ran for about an hour if not plugged in.
I don't know if I'll ever get another laptop. I'm considering one around $1900-2100. Has a ATI Mobility 9800 and the battery would last around 4-5 hours, and only weights 6 lbs. But will probably just end up building a new pc for that much.

The problems i've seen with laptops is they will never be as fast or as good as a PC, if he is really into it he should have both, the PC to do all the "work" and a lappy to use while out and about. The graphic cards on a Lappy are crap (compared to PC).
Thats my thoughts on laptops.

The nVidia 6800 Go w/ DDR3 hung with the best of them. The 7700M I has had a 3.4 w/ 800 FSB. used DDR2.

The lap sounds great,, but yes they are extremly expensive and really could just be built for less,, but that lap top sounds good.

yea this one like i mentioned before is near the highest specs avalible for customization on there Alienware site.
3.8GHz CPU (I heard the hyper-threading acts as though there is 2 3.8GHz's)
200GB HD
and the video card is a 6800GO as flip mentioned so that and the X800 are the best out right now...so as far as the other guy mentioned about laptops vid. cards being crap...thats not true...
also as I mentioned before...I could possibly get one of these for around 1000 CAN so price isnt so much an issue

also, flip, is that the reason you returned the laptop? because the battery lifetime? or were there other reasons? and yeah it is heavy for a laptop but I think he could deal with that...and he could always use a car adapter if need be

yeah HT technology acts like a dual processor
ive got a 3GHZ HT P4 but it doesnt mean it has 2 processor, or even performs like it does! it just allows you to do more processors at once, without clogging everything up. ive not even noticed a massive amount of differenct :)

Actually HT technology can cause a lot more problems than it solves i have also tested its performance and have been promised greater multitasking and to be honest it does improve performance by about 2% or something. Personally another reason to add to my list on why ou should get an AMD they just excel in all areas.
