Hi, i'm having trouble with usb. I have usb 1.x on my dell dimension 8200 bought in '02. I'm getting an ipod soon (I know, the shame of it...) and I don't want to be transfering songs for days so i wanted to get usb 2.0. I don't know do i need to get a new motherboard or can i just buy a usb 2.0 card and stick it into my old motherboard, replacing my 2 old usb 1.x's?

get the card as is a lot cheaper & easier to install than a new motherboard. you'll still have the original usb1's besides having the new usb2's

All you need is a PCI USB 2.0 card that will fit into a PCI slot on your motherboard eg:

http://www.directron.com/usbcard.html...

This will save you money on a new motherboard and give you much needed USB 2.0 for your system........

possible or he wanted to sell you a new board that probably wouldn't work in your tower as the psu connector might not fit it

Yep, sure sounds like he wanted to sell you something else, motherboard etc.

There is no money now that can be made on small PCI peripherals, so what I would do is go back to him and really ask him about CPU and Motherboards he has, spend about half an hour with him, make him think he is going to sell some really expensive stuff.

Then just buy the PCI card............

LOL.........

I don't have a lot of time for sales people, I know it is their job, but if I want to purchase something/enquire about a product then I expect them to be able to give me some good advice, and not try to suade me from my original intentions.

And if that means me 'having some fun at their expense' then I will do it.

The PCWorld near us really have no clue, so when I feel abit narked, off I trot to find some unlucky salesmen to wind up in circles......

I am still looking for a virus, to take with me on my flash drive and to ask a salesmen to demonstrate how easy the 'plug n play' feature is on different brands of their PC's they have........LOL

Most people tend to end up buying things they don't really need/use.........just like branded PC's you get LOTS of stuff, but rarely use any of it................
