I bought 2 DVD-R movies online. Neither will play in my Philips DVD player. The first I could rip on my PC and I have an .iso image to burn. No problem there. The second disc gets read errors 96% of the way in. I tried cleaning the disc and using various apps to read it
including DVD-Decryptor, IsoBuster, DVD Shrink, DVD2SVCD. They all get the errors at 96%.

What I'm wondering is if there is a simple method to chop off the bad end of the last VOB file and fix up the info in the VIDEO_TS files such as running time etc.. The film is pretty close to the end before the errors are encountered so if I could just get an .iso file that would burn correctly I can live with it I guess.

TIA for any suggestions.

I think it's been discussed here about a million times already, but you can set DVD Decrypter to skip over the errors. Go to Tools, Settings, and the I/O tab. Set ignore read errors and retries to 0.

if you can use DVD Shrink and you can get past the analysis stage, you can use Reauthor mode and chop off some of the end.

I've found things are more complicated than that. After burning several copies of the "good" disc both ripping to VIDEO_TS folder and to .iso image with various tools, I've noticed during the burn that the lead-in and lead-out are nearly non-existent. (I don't have Nero set to use shortened lead-in and lead-out.) So I guess the only way I'll get even the "good" disc to play is to reencode or somehow get a file set that will produce a normal lead-in and lead-out.

Am I so lucky that something like IFOEdit can set this or do I have to re-encode VOB files?

That's the rub. It hangs at 96%. Right now I'm doing a recode of the "good" disc using DVD2SVCD to see if I can burn a loadable DVD-R. If I can get one out of the 2 then it's not a complete loss. :) The movies are out of print or I wouldn't have bothered with DVD-R discs that I didn't burn myself.

Hopefully DVD2SVCD converting stuff to AVI and back through TMPGEnc will remove whatever "whammy" has been put on this movie. If this doesn't work then I think it's into the trash with 'em! Just too much hassle! :)

squizzle, your technique worked fine on the "good" disc. I used DVD Shrink to ReAuthor right off the DVD drive and just made an image of the main movie. I'll take my time another day and try to get 95% of the
"bad" movie burned. I should learn something in the process. :)

I saw these out of print flicks when I was a kid. I feel better now that I at least got one of 'em. :)
