I am trying to RIP Star Wars Episode IV and it get about half way and its says the file is encrypted and/or the sector is bad. I have tried DvdShrink, Dvddecrypter, and Isobuster. Everytime it gets stuck at the same % i have no clue what to do.

@TahoePro
Did you try cleaning the disc? It sounds like a bad disc. I had one that had a very bad scratch and some others that the problem couldn't be seen. I followed ScubaPete's Hard to Rip DVD guide - all came out and played fine. Here's the link: http://www.dvdplusvideo.com/tutorial007.html

@3dgfx
What's that about?

When you get 50% through a rip on any dvd you can usually leave out any problem with software. First thing clean the original as well as possible and look for scratches or any other damage. If the disc looks good then it may be corrupt data on the dvd. We are seeing many dvds with corrupt data or bad pressings that a player will overlook, but when you try to rip the dvd the bad sectors show up and usually give the CRC error. There isn't too many options at this point. DVD Decrypter is about the best program for these defective dvds but it doesn't always work either. Set Decrypter to ignor read errors and use brute force and it may work. Only other way is to exchange the dvd or borrow another copy.

To change settings: Go to Tools>settings>I/O tab - bottom right either click on Ignore Read Errors (to remove it or turn it on)
For Brute Force is in the CSS tab.
Like Jerry746 said it may not work but I'd try it - I've been lucky with the few I did this way.
Hopefully your backing up a movie you bought from Blockbuster. :)

The latest from DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter shouldn't be any problem at all.

Try SlySoft's AnyDVD. Some times it works!

I have found out the protection on the disc. It is called CSS/CPPM. I am trying DVD Decypter again.

I have backed up this disk using DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter, there is no special protection on the movie. I agree with Binkie and Jerry it is a defective disk, take it back and get another original.

arniebear is correct. There is no special protection on Star Wars IV. Many people (including myself) had no problems at all. It is not unusual in any way, and it does not have any of the "very recent" copy protection schemes, such as Sony ArCCos.

You have a disc which is dirty, scratched, grimy, or a defective pressing. If you have access to a second DVD drive, even at a friend's PC, you could try that. Some are more tolerant of faults than others. Do a search for all of the various means for cleaning. Try several times. If still no luck, then you can decide whether it is worth it to resort to the more drastic "toothpaste" method (do a search), or whether to try to exchange the disc for another.

Thanks guys for the help, I am letting my buddy try and make the copy for me. Hopefully he has luck with it. If not I can always exchange it or rent it.
