Hi,

I am trying to make a backup copy of my linux DVD, which happens to be a dual layer disk. So I went out and bought some DL Verbatim 8.5Gb DVD+R disks, and tried making a copy with Nero Express (6.6.0.12). The process failed with the following error message (from the logs): see bottom of mail.

I've contacted Nero and they say that DMA is not enabled for my drives, but a) I'm not sure how to enable it (I'm using the Nvidia Nforce motherboard drivers) and b) I think it might be a red herring.

Has anyone else been able to successfully burn a dual layer data DVD with Nero?

Any suggestions much appreciated.

Cheers, Jon.

PC details: Sempron 3000+, Asus A7N8X-deluxe mobo, LG GSA-4163BA DVD burner on PATA, Main harddisk on SATA. WinXP SP2, etc, etc.

Hi there,

Here's a few things I have noticed:

DMA is set to OFF on all your devices.
Turn DMA on !

http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/DMA.html
or
http://www.the-predator.com/dell/sec6-5.html#6-5-1

You LG burner (HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-4163B) has firmware A103.

LG has released firmware A104:
http://us.lgservice.com/

A104 - Improvement of recording quality and readability of DVD media.

Maybe with the latest firmware, it will help.
But fixing that DMA issue is the 1st thing !

Burning at 2.4x (Lowest speed) is a smart thing.
If you get excellent quality media, maybe try faster speed in the future, when you can succesfully burn at 2.4x

Thanks for the cool links, I just had a quick look at scuba pete and will definitely try those instructions.

One thing that occurred to me is that the LG drive supports UDMA66, but currently I don't have an 80pin connector attached, so it is resorting to UDMA33 (well actually according to Nero it will be PIO mode). Do you think that using the 80pin cable may improve matters?

Cheers, Jon.

Hi there,

I always assume people have 80pins cables :)
Since most people have recent computers, and they all come with 80 pins ide cables.

I think it would make a difference since you MUST have an 80 pins to do 100/133.

I might be worth a few $$$ and getting a brand new cable.
I would definitly try it.

But hey, don't send me the bill if it does nothing for you HAHAHA !

Hi cougar,

Thanks for the info - bizarely the drive is still showing up as a UDMA33 device, even though I have installed the 80pin cable - I had one lying about, so don't worry I won't be demanding money ;)

I tried removing the LG burner and my DVD-ROM from the optical drives section of Device Manager and having Windows redetect them but that did not fix it.

And Nero still reports that DMA is off for all my drives (see my bits in the thread called "DMA").

I am getting really frustrated by this, and Nero tech support just keep coming up with the obvious suggestions....

Any ideas?

jon.

Re-uninstall your driver again, reboot your computer, windows will detect it again and reinstall it for you (this will change it back to DMA/ULTRA DMA Mode.)

Get Nero's "clean tool" from its site and clean all their stuff out including "InCD4" - after you've performed the "clean tool" to rid of Nero & InCD, try to look/search for any of left over files, "Delete" it all, even try to search in "Regedit" if you want and delete it all if found any. Now, reinstall your "Nero" only, not "InCD4" and its stuff whatsoever. Again, "reboot" your computer and now you shall be back in business.

Hi Alkohol!

I tried your suggestion - still no joy :( I removed all traces of Nero, then reinstalled only Nero 6.6.0.13. I didn't remove the optical devices, since the Nvidia device tab indicates that both the DVD-ROM and DVD burner are both using UDMA33.

I tried copying the dual layer DVD, using slow mode (reading and writing on the burner) and Nero falls over each time it tried to read from the 2nd layer. Each time I end up with a disk image of ~4.2Gb (i.e. the capacity of single sided DVD). As per usual Nero reports that DMA is off for all my devices.

FYI the DVD I'm trying to copy holds 7.6Gb.

My only conclusion is that this is a bug in Nero - and indicates that it is incompatible with dual layer media on LG GSA-4160 & LG GSA-4163 drives (I have tried both).

Tech support are no longer responding to my emails, so I'm left wondering whether I should get some other software....any suggestions?

Cheers, Jon.

Now why on earth didn't they tell me that straight off. But you read it here - straight from the horse's mouth - Nvidia's IDE driver does not work with Nero.

Surprised? Does this combination work on your Nvidia (nforce) system?

Please let me know.
