Hey all, I want Dolby Digital 5.1 sound out of movies...though someone said to me it can only be down if the movie has AC3 codec and then I need certain programs to extract it....etc etc.
I have a good surround sound stereo system and want the most out of it....I have been burning dvds with WINAVI and only getting Dolby 2.1..

Can anyone recommend some good guides for 5.1 and also if all ac3's have surround?

i assume you are talking divx/xvid with additional AC3 surround audio?

its true you need an AC3 codec to play on your PC (as well as encode to DVD i think)

unless you have the AC3 surround file you will get 2.1

most people here mainly work on DVDs tho... i cant handle looking at the quality loss of DVD compared to DIVx on a big TV :)

Sorry but as I am a newb I can't get my point across properly.
Yes I want to have DVD movies from AVI files on my comp, presume some are and aren't divx...but I want surround sound.....how can I tell which files have AC3 and which ones have AC3 5.1???

Also any good tutorials for programs to do such? Cheers

there are certain apps (such as gspot) that let you examine AVI files and tell you what codec (divx, xvid mpeg4) has been used as well as the audio options.

as far as i know if you have the AC3 codec on your machine (check the software page above for a codec pack if you havent) then the encoding (divx > DVD) will pull the audio through as 5.1/DTS etc
