I recently returned a new NEC DVD-RW burner to the store because the read and write speed that I achieved was about 60 % slower than my old Lite-on. Bought a new Lite-on 1673s (with dual layer writing capablility) instead, and I have the same problem. I am using regular dvd-r blanks (Phillips and TDK), not the DL. Can't imagine why the newer writer would be so much slower than the old one. I use Shrink to read, copy and shrink, and Nero to write. I have a brand new Dell 8400, with 512 mb of RAM. I have the original DVD ROM drive as the primary and the Lite-on 1673S as secondary. I also have a system that I built myself, and I tried this new writer in it as well, with my old Lite-on writer as the primary, and the new 1673s as secondary. In both cases the new Lite-on was blown away in speed by the others. Is there a setting I need to do to improve my 1673s speed?

First thing to check is that the IDE channel that the new burners are installed on are set to DMA not PIO. If they are on DMA then this may be the problem with the rip speed. Some manufacturers lock the rip speed of their burners to 2x max. To unlock them you may need a hacked firmware. Be advised that most manufacturers void warranties if that type firmware is installed. Also new burners may not have a hacked firmware available yet. You can check this site for more information. Good Luck.

Check the Lite-ON website for recomended media. Be sure your using the latest firmware for your Litey as well. I have great sucess using Verbatim DVD+R and CD-R media :)

I don,t think liteys have riplock. Are you refering to slow rip speeds or slow write speeds? Out of my two dvdrw's, my litey will rip almost twice as fast as my benq. They are very comparable when set at the same burning speed although the benq will burn most 4x rated media at 8x and most 8x rated media at 12x.

Try some different media both of those brand have been known to be made by sub-par manufactures. I don't know if you're useing +r or - r but here are some media codes for both. Notice those CMC Mag codes, yuk. BTW liteys perform better with +r media and you can also booktype them dvd-rom with the litey.

you know what, i keep reading about Liteys and +format, but never really paid attention before as have had no issues with -R (still having no issues). But i think i might just start buying +R next time (might start buying 16x Verbs - yum). It can't hurt.. I'm only just starting to experiment with burning at 8x as had a couple bad Verb burns at 8x, though i think that was down to lack of RAM. I have a gig now so i'm gonna start 8x; when my stock runs out i'll go for +R i think..

Use a program called KProbe and do some PIE/PIF scans to see the quality of your burns. This will help you determine what media is best for your burner as well as what speed to burn at. :)

cheers, i know about all that stuff, just found it easier to stay at 4x. Got bitten by 100s of crappy 8x Bulkpaq's when i started out (they were written at 4x) so went to decent media and kept to 4x out of paranoia. Many 100s of perfect movies later and i still use -R at 4x even on trusty Verbs, just hadn't bothered with +R format yet much..
It's too easy to get bogged down with the PIF scans etc, i see a lot of that going on over on cd freaks forums, i'm a tad lazy :)

In answer to your question, Mort81, I am referring to both ripping speed and burn speed. If, for example, I use DVD Shrink to rip, the initial scan of the DVD movie that normally takes a little over one minute with my old Liteon ldw411s (rated max read and write rate of 4x, takes about 2 1/2 minutes using the new 1673s burner. Then the ripping that usually takes about 9 minutes (for a movie that does not need to be shrunk) on the old Liteon, takes about 25 minutes on the new Liteon. The writing process on 8x media, takes about 1 hour on the new Liteon - which my software tells me is burning at 8x, compared to 30 minutes using the old Liteon - which ironically my system tells me is burning at 2x or 4x.

I have yet to try the DMA setting suggested by Jerry746; I don't have access to the computer with the problem at this moment. I strongly suspect, though, that the drive is already set to DMA. In the meantime, if anyone else has any suggestions, please pass them on.

Hmmm, I wonder if it's a jumper setting on the back of your drive. I have a home built pc with SATA hdd drives so my dvdrw drive on IDE channel 0 is set to master and my dvdrw drive on IDE channel 1 is also set to master. Most would set one drive to master and one drive to slave on the same IDE channel without SATA hdd's. I'm not sure on Dells but I have read that some of them use the cable select jumper setting.

Good point Mort81 - Compaq's can be like that too. Bloody cable select can be a right pain in the bum. Some experimentation needed - try copying some data off a disc with cable select set, then do the same with master or slave as necessary.

After my last post (5/19 10:43), I read the installation instructions that came with the Lite-on drive, and saw where it said that making the Lite-on drive the master was strongly recommended. Let me make some corrections to a statement in my original post. I stated I had the original DVD ROM drive set to primary and the new Lite-on DVD RW drive set to secondary. The reality is that both were attached to the same IDE cable, with the DVD ROM set to MASTER, and the RW set to SLAVE. This Dell 8400 system has one SATA connector for the hard drive, and only one IDE connector/channel for the DVD drives, so both DVD drives have to share the same cable. Therefore, I tried what Jerry746 suggested. On the only IDE channel, the DVD ROM was "device 0," with Transfer Mode set to "DMA if available," and Current Transfer Mode at "UDMA 2." On the other hand, the Lite-on was "device 1," with Transfer Mode set to "DMA if available," but the Current Transfer Mode was automatically set to PIO, and I could not change that latter option. I ended up having to change the jumper settings to make the Lite-on master, and the DVD ROM drive the slave. Now the Lite-on is fast and the DVD Rom drive is automatically deemed PIO, and is slow. [I am the not-so-new newbie helping a very novice newbie solve this problem. Again, at this point I don't have acess to her computer.] Would like to make both DVD drives master, but I don't suppose I can make two drives on the same cable master, can I? For a separate problem, Dell Tech Support had recommended installing an IDE controller (I suppose he meant via a PCI slot). I have no experience with those controllers. Can anyone suggest a decent IDE controller?

Thanks to all of you for your input

only 1 IDE slot.....Still...

...the 2 optical drives will co-exist on the solitary IDE channel quite happily, you just need to prise the PIO device into DMA.

You could buy an IDE controller (the name Promise springs to mind here)... BUT you don't need one.

Someone happily correct me, but that's the way it should be. I think cable-select was ruled out further up the post so i can't see why one being set to master and one set to slave will be a problem, even with SATA in the mix. I've had many PCs with all IDE channels maxed out, as long as everything's separately jumpered. I've never frowned upon optical drives sharing same cable as hard drives, but that was admittedly when hard drives were a tad slower than they are today.

Thanks for your response, Creaky. How do you "prise the PIO device into DMA?" Maybe I am approaching this the wrong way. To attempt to make the changes, I go to Device Manager> IDE/ATA/ATAPI controllers>right click Primary IDE Channel>Properties>Advanced Settings tab. Under Device 1, "DMA if Available" is selected under Transfer Mode, but under Current Transfer Mode, "PIO" is selected, and is unalterable by the user. Is there a different approach that will enable you to modify this automatically chosen PIO option?

this is easy, but it's one of the bits i never explain clearly enough. hang on i'll have a look. Here you go - http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/DMA.html - far easier than me wibbling on :)

DMA dropping to PIO mode is basically due to 6 consecutive CRC errors triggering the mode drop. If i recall correctly this is only really a problem in XP, and there are permanent ways to get around it but i won't get into that for now!..
