Is this just a "ripper-urban-myth"? I have read of such circuitry in the threads and it has roused my curiousity.
I am tired of grinding with the Disk Doctor and would also prefer not to go the software "fault recovery" route. My lite-on needs replacement every 100 rips or so, because it looses it's capability to read through minor scuffing and light scratching and even a new one doesn't do all that well.
So, IS there a ripper brand that does a better job due to it's electronics or optics ???
Thanks and best regards

Good question. I had a problem ripping a disc using both my cruddy LG DVD-ROM drive (never again!) and my Pioneer DVR-108...if there were any scratches on it, they were practically imperceptible.
I'm also having a problem reading a couple of old-ish CD-Rs...admittedly, they're not the best quality, but they appear to be scratch- and scuff-free.
I can't help but wonder if it's my drives, or if it really is the discs.

I've ripped countless dvd's with my Lite-ON 165 dvd-rom and it's till alive and kickin' Lite-ON DVD-ROM's are very fast dvd rippers, as well as Asus 16x. Do your clean your dvd's before you rip? If not you should and be sure your using DVD Decrypter. :)

Yeah, I clean the the originals real well. I use CloneDVD2 with AnyDVD. Once you've got that combination, no other software or freeware is necessary.
Thanks dude (we say that alot in CA) but I was mostly looking for a hardware (DVD-ROM brand) answer here ... anyone else?
Thanks again Shoey.

Well most of us who backup dvd movies prefer a very fast dvd ripper.
1) Lite-ON (16x)
2) Asus (16x)
These 2 dvd-roms are great audio rippers that produce excellent DAE quality. Asus is the faster Safedisc reader :), both can rip "most" audio cd protection as well.I've been using DVD Decrypter and CloneDVD2, the best combo :)

I'm pretty well versed in the lite-On having gone through half a dozen of them since my "backup career" began in the old DXC days. Don't know anything about the Asus's DVD ripping capabilities. I would sacrafice speed for scratch tolerance anyday!
I guess what I'm trying to find is the person who, somewhat recently, advised another poster about the superior scratch-reading circuitry or firmware or optics of a certain brand of ripper. I didn't pay enough attention to the post at the time. If that poster knew what they were talking about (through research or he/she has an engineering background), I'd sure like to recapture that advise. Tried search ... couldn't find the post. Maybe it was posted on another forum like cdfreaks but I think it was afterdawn. ... and maybe the poster was just "talking through his hat" and I'm just chasing down a rumor, myth or just plain b.s. (some people just want to sound knowledgeable).
I'll just watch for posts on this thread.
