Man this is killing me. I have a gateway 820GM computer with a 12x +/- Dual layer burner, and its a media center computer. It will burn + discs no problem until I try 16x speed discs, it will only burn them at 4x. Then I try and use 8x - discs, and it won't even burn those, I have to use my external sony 4x for those. I tried researching a firmware update, but I can't even figure out who made the drive. Can anyone give me a little assistance? I just bought 100 16x plus discs for the speed and I don't want them to have been a waste.

I did that, lol. It came up with that iomega one that you linked to, as well as an LG one, and I wasn't about to screw around with an update when I couldn't be sure which one it was. I appreciate the link though, tons.

I have heard that HL-DT-ST drives are made by LG for use as OEM computers by various manufactures. LG does not support firmware upgrades for the diferent variations depending upon which OEM the drive ends up installed. Therefore, you are at the mercy of Gateway to get an official firmware upgrade.
