Iomega 8X DVD external won't read or write CD-Rs

My DVD drive works great with DVD -r's. I can't use dvd +r even thought i am supposed to be able to, but it is noe big deal, because I cand use dvd -r just fine. real problem is I cannot butn CD-Rs or even read them with this drive. is this normal? any suggestions?
