I have just purchased an NEC 3520A. It came with A104 firmware and I flashed it to 1UF. What a difference. This new firmware is awesome. The drive is still quiet but the riplock is removed and bitsetting is enabled. It recogzizes most 8x media at 12x or 16x and the burn is great. The picture quality looks 1:1.

Sounds interesting. Should anything go wrong, will it allow you to flash back to original firmware....

I beleive so, but I do not think anything will go wrong. Just make sure there is no disc in the drive and close all running background apps. Then download the firmware and flash the .exe program. The firmware will let know if the process was sucessful and then reboot. It was easy.

Thanks AlanD. May get a second one and an external enclosure for my laptop. Would definitely then flash it with Liggy & Dees firmware because I would need a fast ripper for my laptop. Right now my Liteon 167T is just fine for my desktop. But I have downloaded the 1UF firmware and have it ready just in case.....Thanks for the tip...

I remember when you bought that Liteon, I think you said you got it at Walmart or Target, I got one too, it is now in my closet with 4 other drives and a lot of graphics cards.

Aland: five drives in the closet. We both have come a long way since our Pioneer 106D, eh?

Its all about the media. I have been test the Nec 3520A all day. It loves 8x Taiyo Yuden + or dash. It burns the dash at 12x and the + at 16x. It also love the TTG-02 TDK media 8x. It burns that also at 12x. It hates Prodisc8xdash, and it also hates Sony8x MadeinTaiwan. Loves the Sony8xMade in Japan (Yuden002). It is all about the media with this drive.

@ALAND
Did you happen to try ripping a dvd before you flashed it? I did, it hit max at about 2.3x, about 37 minutes. My 3520 eats up the TY+R as well, 16x burns with very good quality scans

Yes I did. I never got a bad burn, but the burns have been better after the flash. The firmware was designed for specific media, with Yuden 000-T02-00 being one of the best. It burns at 16x, when the rated speed is 8x. The quality of the burn is also excellent, and if have a problem you can always flash it back to the original firmware.
