Why is it that whenever there are smoke or fog effects in a game, it slows down? I use the Radeon X300 and I know that my other gaming components are strong enough.

is there a patch or something I need to download?

To be honest your X300 is about the same as a Geforce FX5200 not the best peformers in the graphics card world, i used to play hitman contracts with the FX5200 256mb and in one scene there is smoke effects and it slowed down, the only way round this is to upgrade your graphics card....

Sorry, but that is it ......the X300 is an entry level card if you want smooth performance and no lock ups in your gaming then your going to have to upgrade to at least mid range or higher, patches are there to fix bugs in games they won't improve your graphics card .... not meaning to be harsh but thats how it is ...

ok so what do you think of the x600 then, should I buy that one and if I do do you think that it might be strong enough to handle Half-Life 2 or any of the games coming out next year? I would really like to buy the Quadro FX 4400 but <ehem> I work nowhere

You would see a good overall performance gain in the X600 Vs.X300 it should play HL2 but i'm not to sure how future proof it is , whats your budget for a card and what country are you in ??

Thanks a lot for the help. The X600 seems to be the card for me and i'll give those people the benefit of the doubt since i'm pretty much lost when it comes to things like versions of Open GL, PixelShader, Pipelines and stuff like that. <corny joke> i'll have to continue my training in the way of the video card before I can make my descision </corny joke>

Really, i'm good with every other part of the computer and I do some programming (as shown on http://www.freewebs.com/dsheep/new_page_2.htm <-my website). But the video card presents a new challenge for me.

Thanks again.

Yeah it took me a while to figure it all out, if you save a few more $$ go get yourself a 6600GT it's about the best mid range card you can get, it will leave the x600 for dust and will handle any game you chuck at it ;)

But its a 128MB video card, how can it be more powerful than the cheaper 256MB models?

More questions just keep popping into my head!

1. I was doing some sniffing around on my compuer and I saw Radeon x300 series and radeon x300 series secondary. Does that mean that I have 2 video cards?

2. Which one is better, an AGP based or PCI Express based graphics card

3. How do I tell which ones I have available (PCI or AGP)

Guys I'm sorry to be a pain but before I buy something this expensive, I really need to know if it is the best buy and find out everything about it.

agp slot is usually brown about same length as a pci slot but set back from back of case further than pci. also i think pci/e is on the new intel & amd socket boards like 775 & 993 & not on the older boards. you may have 2 video connectors on the card, vga & dvi.

I do know what the two look like but... anywho that's not why i'm replying, I just thought that I'd let you know that I found the card that I want. it's the GeForce 6600 GT PCI-E. I got a clear understanding of what there is to know about video cards and stuff and this is the card i've chosen.

I read the reviews on firingsquad.com and I like what I see. this card seems to be able to run all the games that I would consider playing.

Thanks alot jonni3 and dpp for putting up with me and helping me.

does your motherboard have pci/e because if not than can't use the GeForce 6600 GT unless you get new motherboard that does & that will fit your cpu!!!

kshep92 make double sure you mobo is PCI-E & not AGP, you can get the 6600GT in either format but please double check as you don't want the hassle of returning a incompatable card .... other than that the 6600GT rocks, you won't be dissapointed dude ....
