Not even sure how to explain my question...
Idealy ALL my software and video that is being edited will be on the same drive... correct?

My set up was to be a 10000 RPM 72 GB drive with Windows and all my programs... and a 300 GB 7200 RPM drive for video and other files.

Now I am wondering if the faster drive is even worth it.

Ideas, affirmations? suggestions?

while a 10,000 RPM drive will have a faster seek time, it probably isn't THAT much faster at transferring data. That all of course depends on what kind of hard drives they are though. (SCSI, PATA, SATA?) But in general a 7200 RPM drive will be perfectly fine for capturing video, editing and rendering.

And to answer your question, NO you do not want your system (windows) and video files on the same drive...keep them separate and store media on separate drives. The editing software runs much more smoothly that way.

For the best quality mp3s use EAC (exact audio copy) to rip your audio CDs and LAME to encode them. Follow this guide:

Ideally, if you are editing video or backing up DVDs etc, your source files will be on one HD and your output sent to another HD.
(There is a good argument for 3 HDs in any PC :^)
A Raptor containing your OS is a good plan, speeding up your startup and Windows-loading etc.
A solid storage disk, lots of space but speed not so important, is rational thinking too...
Raptors are SATA-only, are they not?
I have SATA drives but still use an UltraATA drive C: as system drive (containing boot files).
Then there is D: boot drive (containing OS system files).
And E: is a big video storage drive that also contains the Windows pagefile (WinXP calls it the Pagefile drive).
I can mix audio from C: with video from D: and output the AVI product to E: - could you imagine 1 HD trying to do that all itself?
Personally Raptors don't do it for me, but these Maxtors with 16MB caches are givin' me a chubb... I think I definitely need one (or 2) LoL ;^)

Western Digital Raptor WD740GD 73GB 10,000 RPM 8MB Cache Serial ATA150 Hard Drive

Drive 2: Working Drive - pieces-parts of video will go here
Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 SATA NCQ ST3160827AS 160GB 7200 RPM 8M Cache Serial ATA150 Hard Drive

Drive 3: Result of work, videos, MP3's, Files, etc.
Maxtor MaXLine III 7B300S0 300GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache Serial ATA150 Hard Drive

Second Best:

could also partition the 300gig hd into 2 partitions of 150gig each
