I have been using This program for a while and have notice some strange things. At times in the playback of a DVD made from this there will be a pause, some pixeling while paused, DVD player fails to continue to read disc or shuttering (pause, go, pause, go)Now strange enough it has nothing to do with the video time. It seems to be on the exact same place on the disc with any affected DVD. One last wierd thing to throw in. If I take an effected disc and play in Windows Media Player then all is well. At first I thought it just might be my Stand alone haveing trouble until I called my brother. I sent him a few discs that I made and he had the same problem on the same discs. Not all disc have the problem.

Here is how I use it. Depending on the file type I will make them into a M2V or a VOB before bringing into DVD Lab. When I bring them into the program I usualy just drop them in without Demux. Sometimes I have to join VOBs. I tried once with Demux and the problem was still there. I make my menus then auto chapter. Usualy 6. Then let it author. I keep the the final files for testsing. Most of the time I run those final files through DVD Shrink and burn with NERO 6. Even the ones that do not need shrink have these issues sometimes. When noticing a problem on the final DVD I look at those final DVD Lab VOB sets to see if the problem is there as well. All is always fine as well as playing DVD in Media player.

So what is it then. They way things are being writen to DVD? DVD Media is not liked (Memorex 8x using 2.4x burn)? Stand alones just don't like DVD made from DVD Labs? I know it is not DVD shrink. I backup my kids DVD all the time using nero to burn the DVD srhink files onto the Memorex. Those DVD never have problems. It must have something to do with DVD Labs. PLease let me know what you think and if there are any options I may have overlooked. Also if DVD LABS just sucks and I should find something else that does what it can do.

Thanks

Hi there,
Quote:
At times in the playback of a DVD made from this there will be a pause, some pixeling while paused, DVD player fails to continue to read disc or shuttering (pause, go, pause, go)
This usually happens in these conditions:

1- Was burned too fast (Try to burn at 2x, 4x)
Some will burn at 8x but on the best media (Taiyo Yuden).

2- Cheap Media

3- If it occurs near the end, it's because it was written to close to the edge. People who use DVDShrink set the output to 4300mb instead of the default 4464mb.

A) Use http://www.dvdinfopro.com (DVDInfoPro) and tell us what's the media ID of your DVDs.

B) Burn one at 2x or 4x

C) Using DVDInfoPro, run a media scan, and see if there's any READ errors.

If it's 100% it should play without a problem.

If you are having burning issues, and use Nero or CopyToDVD, provide us with a full log.

Regardless of the software used, if it plays ok on the computer, and does not on the DVD player, it's most likely media and burning speed as mentioned above.

Memorex, not the best.

you are already doing the trick I use, running the files through Shrink and burning with Nero. That will pretty much insure your files are DVD-Video compliant. All your symptoms point to bad media.

The drive you are using to read the disc in your PC is more forgiving than your stand-alone.

A successful burn with one disc is no guarantee that the next one will work. Especially with Memorex.

It is looking like media. I also have some TDK +R I forgot about. The next bad burn I had was duplicated on the TDK. When the TDK disk hit a bad spot that was on the Memorex it would continue to play. Only once did the TDK show a brief video "Hicup" (could have been apart of the file) but continued without pauseing or shuddering (when it hit a bad spot that was on the Memorex). So it seems that TDK is better than Memorex but still not quite the best to use,

One more very strange thing about the TDK media. In the PS2 it must be placed in the tray a certain way or the PS2 will not see the disk. Usualy with the writing going from left to right. The Memorex in the PS2 does not matter how it is placed in the tray. No, PS2 is not the only machine I test with.

My DVD burner is old, you can see it in my top system specs. It will only write at 1x or 2.4x. I can, and have upgraded firmware to make it a different SONY model that can write at 4x. I downgraded from that since it would take Nero as long as Roxio (POS) to start burning the disk. I felt that firmware update may have been causeing some problems. It is now back to its original state.

What is some good affordable media? I am not makeing these to sell so I don't need what Speilburg might use. Just good enough to play without problem and cheep.

Thanks

I am not sure now this is a media issue. I just made a disk using the stuff I already have. (Money is tight cant buy anything) When playing it back I noticed something interesting. 3 of the files where very compressed and 1 file was just slightly compressed. This of course needed to fit onto DVD-5. In the 3 very compressed videos the PS2 would stop-play-stop-play-etc. Nothing was skipped it was much like when you are viewing a video stream off the internet and the playing catches up with the download. On that 1 file just slightly compressed, it played fine. No stopping or anything. And that file did cover areas of the disk I seem to always have trouble with.

This would rule out bad media due to the fact that on one file on disk it had no problems at all in areas that always showed problems in the media. The 3 mentioned files had more frequent and sever problems than usual and did not correspond with what seems to be known bad spots in the media. So here is my thought.

The problem may be with how the PS2 decompresses the video and is not able to do it fast enough if the video is compressed to much. So when the file drains the buffer then you get a pause while it decompresses again. I have tested this on another disk. Made a disk with 2 of the files mentioned above and no compression. Same media even (Memorex). The PS2 played it without a problem.

So now that I know it is a compression issue what is the suggested amount of compression to use? I will be sending the disk to another DVD played other than PS2 to see if the same issues are there. I know the PS2 is sensitive but until I get some cash I will have to use it as a DVD player. I don't even play games on it anymore. I guess I should sell it. My brothers DVD player has fewer if any problems on the same disk the PS2 had major problems with. Media player plays the same disk without any problems.

Memorex may suck but what is a good fair priced brand?

Its funny though. they run from thier a fight for thier own freedoms. Now they have far less freedoms than where we came from.

I will take a look arround the mentioned fourum. Thanks. What about compression ratio sugestions to avoid decompression problems in stand alones?
