Any disadvantages to changing book type?

Well, are there any when changing +R to -ROM? Or should I just auto-change book type to -ROM for any situation as a precaution? Specifically for data discs.

I don't think you'll have a problem with data discs. Most people change the book type so their players will read it. Most new players will read +/-R. And back to your data discs, if you had a very old DVD ROM you may need to do that.
