I'm trying to make a backup of the new Star Wars Trilogy. I tried to rip it with dvd decrypter and dvd shrink, and in both cases, the end result is darker than the original. I did the same thing with another movie to see if it was the same, but there was virtualy no differences between copy and original. It's like there something in SW that doesn't copy well. What could make a copy look darker than the original? In the scene where they fall in the garbage compactor, I can hardly see the wall in the back... Am I the only one with that problem?

Thanks

Probably the compression of the movie, try doing advanced analysis with QE of smooth or max smooth. If you want exact copy of the original then you will have to use DVD 9.

I forgot to mention I'm not using any compression. I'm using dvdfab to split the movie in two. I tought maybe dvdfab was the problem but it seem to work fine with others movies.

Are you saying you used DVD Fab or Shrink and Decrypter?

I use DVD Decrypter first, and after I use dvdfab 0.17 to split in two. Maybe there is something wrong with my configuration. I'll try it on another computer to see if it ends up the same way.

Are you just backing up the movie, if so try using Shrink in re-author mode with start and end frames to split your movie and burn with Decrypter. See if that works out better for you, here is a guide on the process.

Main PC ~ Intel C2Q Q6600 (G0 Stepping)/Gigabyte GA-EP45-DS3/2GB Crucial Ballistix PC2-8500/Zalman CNPS9700/Antec 900/Corsair HX 620W
Network ~ DD-WRT ~ 2node WDS-WPA2/AES ~ Buffalo WHR-G54S. 3node WPA2/AES ~ WRT54GS v6 (inc. WEP BSSID), WRT54G v2, WRT54G2 v1. *** Forum Rules ***

Hey dominich,

i just tried this with star wars ep. IV from my newly purchased Star Wars Trilogy..

-make yourself two folders on your desktop, i made SW_ep4_disc1 & SW_ep4_disc2 for example.
-pop episode 4 in your drive then open up DVD shrink
-click on the re-author tab, double-click STAR_WARS_EPISODE_IV on the right hand side, double click 'title 1'
-on the right hand side you will see a drop down box which says 'automatic' click this & select 'no compression'. you will see the bar at the top of the page go one-third RED. this is good.
-click the 'set start/end frames' icon on the left hand side (re-authored dvd)
- set the end frame to 'chapter 27' in the small drop down box on the right of the screen
-click 'backup' at the top of the page, you get your usual box pop up,
-click the drop down where you select your drive, select 'ISO Image File' then browse to find the SW_ep4_disc1 folder you made on your desktop. select to encode the movie into there. chocks away!

- when the first half of your movie is done, go back to shrinks' main page.

-repeat everything you did earlier (other than making your desktop folders) but when you get to 'set start/end frames' set the start frame to 'chapter 28'
-click 'backup' at the top of the page, you get your usual box pop up,
-click the drop down where you select your drive, select 'ISO Image File' then browse to find the SW_ep4_disc2 folder you made on your desktop. select to encode the movie into there. hey presto!

the idea is (although i havent done this yet) is then to go DVD Decrypter/mode/ISO write & burn your disc one.. then repeat and burn disc two.

... this my way i burned an unaltered, main movie copy of Star Wars episode 4 onto 2 discs with no compression...

sorry if its a bit long winded, but, hey...

I've come to the conclusion that the darker effect must be normal. I tried to make the copy with another computer with the same result. It's not such a big problem, I'm sure most people don't even notice it. Compare the back wall color in the scene where they fall in the garbage compactor. You have to watch it on a tv and not your computer because on the computer all videos are a little darker and this is normal. Anyway I'll just live with it and stop looking for perfection :)

Well... I think I got it, my toshiba d-r2 seems to set the image a little darker when playing a recorded dvd. That would explain everything. So there's no problem with my copies after all.
