I've backed up loads of DVDs before without any problems, always using DVD-Rs. This time I foolishly asked a friend to get some disks for me instead of getting them myself and he's got me some TDK DVD-RWs.

That shouldn't really be a problem, but I've tried burning onto them with both DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink, and both tell me that the disks need erasing, even though they're new, empty disks! Both programmes offer to erase the disk but both of them encounter errors which prevent them from doing so (as does DvdInfo Pro, which I also tried to erase with).

What's even more puzzling is that I know there's nothing wrong with the disks, as my friend has burnt some from the very same pack himself with DVD Shrink without any problems.

I can't see why new DVD-RWs would need erasing, or why if they did no programme would be capable of doing so without encountering errors. Since I know that these disks can work, does that mean the problem is with my drive? Considering how many DVD-Rs it's successfully burnt in the past, that seems unlikely. Any help would be appreciated.

My drive is a TOSHIBA DVD-ROM SD-R6112 1530 (ATA), and the media ID is TDK601saku.

The DVD Decrypter error message reads as follows:

I/O Error!

Device [1:0:0] TOSHIBA DVD-ROM SD-R6112 1530 (D:) (ATA)

I'm sure that some of the members will ask if you have updated the firmware for your drive. There are surely a lot of guides on this site to help you with that. Also, your drive/burner may not be compatible with RWs. I have an HP and cannot use RWs. Hopefully this helps. I'm sure someone will come behind me and correct me if I am misguided ;0P

Ok thanks, I've just searched for firmware updates through DVD Decrypter but the only things listed seem to be intended to make my drive region free; would that help somehow? Also the three patches there are for drives with 10xx, 17xx, or 1Mxx firmware, whereas mine is 1530.

You might try going to the manufacturer's website to see if there are any updates available. With HP I get automatic updates. Hope this helps somewhat.

Have you tried formatting your RW's?

Toshiba don't offer firmware and the only ones I can find elsewhere are for drives with 10xx, 17xx, or 1Mxx firmware - mine is 1530.

I have tried formatting the disks but that didn't work either.

Reading thru the user comments about your drive from videohelp.com, one said the drive is picky about the media it uses. Maybe your drive doesnt like that brand of RW's.
