I cant figure out why the DVD burner that created the DVD cant play or recognize the disc. Any ideas.

First of all it is highly recommended that you get away from crap memorex (usually made by CMC MAG ) media. If it isn't causing problems now more than likely it will. What is the media codes of your discs?

You can use this free proggy to determine the media codes of your discs. http://dvd.identifier.cdfreaks.com/ I would recommend in order of preferance, verbatum (azo dye), genuine taiyo yuden, maxell, fuji, sony, ricohjpn, and branded ritek ridata. Stay away from memorex, no name brands, and retail store branded media eg: staples, comp usa.
You probably noticed I did recommend fuji as it is normally good media. The media code will tell for sure. Here's some examples of media codes. Any media made by CMC MAG is crap and if it doesn't cause problems at first it will more than likely become unplayable over time.
Memorex DVD+R 16X (CMCMAG M01)
Memorex DVD+R 4x (CMC MAG.F01)
Fujifilm DVD-R 4x (ProdiscS03)
Fujifilm DVD-R 4x (TYG01.......)

Best Buy has the 100 disc cake box of 8x + and - R Fuji's on sale this week for $39.99. I just bought some today. Make sure it say's they are made in Japan. Look right above the bar code. These are Taiyo Yudens. IMO, the best media there is. If you don't need this many, they will have them in smaller quantities. Just make sure it says made in Japan and you should be OK.

I have had great success with the Ritek Ridata. You can catch it on sale with rebate and free shipping at NEWEGG.COM for about 30-33 cents each in 100 count for the +R or +RW format. The - format even cheaper.

Thank you all for your help and advice. i have downloaded dvd identifier and tried it but I get "Disc Identification did not complete successfully". Also, "ADIP Read M1 failed: illegal request-invalid field in CDB [05/24/00]" "ADIP Read Method 1 not supported; A Firmware Upgrad is Recommended"

Thats kinda weird, I can't find an official firmware page for NEC drives. All kinds of unofficial f/w available.
They could also use DVD Decrypter to download newer firmware. Tools<drive<check for firmware update but this won't come from official NEC website either.

Well, I tried to install the 1.93 firmware version but it does not recognize my drive. I think I followed the instruction correctly but I could not get it to recognize the drive. I know the drive has something wrong with it but it still works with originals. I went back and checked the DVDs I burned and I think you guys were right, the FUJI DVDs worked but not the Memorex. I guess I will have to back up again when the Memorex start to fail.

Memorsux strikes again. They should be required by law to reemburse with compesation, all the people that bought their media.

memorex should be forced to read part of my sig and have it as their home page, and on their media packaging (a bit like cigarettes - memorex kills)
Quote: Memorex/CMC et al can't even make single layer discs that work / or that are even consistent in being crap. They fool ppl into buying them by giving a few good burns, but then generate huge amounts of traffic on sites such as this due to the hassle they cause so many ppl. And Memorex/CMC et al being let loose on dual layer media. The mind boggles..

LMAO, worried for a while then...........?
Actually you may find that the forums across the net are affiliated with memorex, therefore the forums pay memorex a small retainer to produce shite, thus increasing the amount of users/members to the forums, which would then increase advertisements and banners, increasing the revenue to the forums and memorex...........
Oh, yes I am onto their schemes, cannot cover the eyes over the sheep.............LOL
