dvd reads once with un/reinstall

I have an emprex dvd burner and it has been working perfectly, but now it does not notice when i've inserted a cd/dvd. It spins the disk for a couple seconds, then nothing. If i un/reinstall the drive it works once or twice but then stops, and i've tried burning video onto a dvd (just after an install), but the dvd doesn't work in my dvd player. I believe it all began when I put an old care bears movie in my drive, but I could be wrong. Has anyone heard of something like this before? I need help
