tecy, tried burning my first two ritek DVD-R g04's with Nero 5, but it stopped after 1%, claiming a SCSI error?
I don't have any SCSI!
do you think some of the DW-U10A's probs can come from Nero reacting badly to other installed burning progs such as DVD Decrypter?
Sony DW-U10A
Dated June 2003 Firmware v1.1d
does anyone know the address for firmware updates and the prog for reversing the firmware back to original if req?, sure i've read it in this thread someware?

I've had the Sony DWU10A drive since June and only had trouble burning to Datawrite -RW disks. This was due to the media being duff. i've managed to burn X4 speed on both DataWrite Classic Redtop and BulkPaq Orange -R discs with no problems ( 'cos I'm a tightarse :) ). However, using Nero V6, I noticed on some of the films I copied (usually 50 minutes into the film) the picture would start to jump and the lip-sync would be out by about a second. After reading about this on various sites, I now burn films using CloneDVD ( after ripping with DVD Shrink ) without any problems and still at X4 speed. Nothing wrong with the drive/firmware, still original v1.1d. Hope this helps. Using XP PRO, Athlon1700xp, 526Mb mem.

Bassett, thanx, used Nero 5 cos it came with the drive, and noticed it was mentioned alot on this site, have done 2 films onto Memorex DVD+RW 2.4X to test my decrypting, and they seem to play OK, quality seems V/good, but then yesterday it did not loike the ritek DVD-R's at all, and began acting funny, Nero "In CD" when packet writing other DVD-RW's.
mate of mine said Nero does act funny with some other progs, suggested burning with DVD Decrypter,
thought the Sony might prefer DVD+R to -R,
always used Easy CD Creator in the past, with my old phillips cd-rw,
need something for packet writing, might try Easy CD instead,
Using W98SE on a P4 with 512MB, could be W98 causing probs, its on a fairly clean image, using it suits my present multi-booting set-up, WXP probly works better, Imaging saves a lot of bother! Might try Nero on its own, on a fresh image, nothing else installed,
Thought about trying different brands, but do not want to waste the 25 Ritek DVD-R's,
thanx for the info,
Tecy

Im using win98se and have found rip times longer using DVDsrink. Win2k was faster by 30 min using the same software. Iv used Nero all version with loads of other Burning sofware and never have any problems, only thing that did happen was that when I 1st used my CD writer it was a little slow I then use clonecd and was quicker now its been quicker ever since even in nero? Im about to try a Bulkpaq G4 dvd+r tonight keep you updated.

Ok well thats sum up what I have done to get my sony writer to burn at 4x.

Upgraded to win 2k and now using Nero 6, Updated my drive with hacked Liton firmware only worked with win 2k not win98se. Used Datawrite G4 DVD-R and got a 24:29 min burn.
Tryed Bulkpaq 4X G4 DVD+R again using nero 6 burned in 16:01 min "result" at last. Plays fine in my Sony DVPNS330 stand alone DVD player.

reading this thread, i bought some ritek DVD-R's, when i inserted them, drive locks up and will not burn more than 1%, with either Nero 5 or Clone DVD on W98 SE, yet both of them love Memorex 1x-2.4x DVD+RW's, but Nero acts up trying to packet write to them, has anyone else had the same or similar probs with the same spec burner? (See below) mate of mine tried them on his burner OK, not a DW-U10A, am going to try some other brands, Bulkpaq Orange, Someone recomend me a packet writer than works well with the DW-U10A, Roxio Easy CD + DVD Creator? any success?

firemanX Hi,
Mine works fine now,
since my last reply, I now packet write with Easy CD&DVD Creator installed, just the packet writing bit, i seemed to have probs with Nero, dont install anything you do not need,
see details below,
you do not get anything with the drive, as far as i know, Sony do not support the DW-U10A as it is a OEM (Original equipment manufacture)model, but it seems that many people have upgraded the DW-U10A's firmware to DRU-500A standard, the DRU-500A is supported by Sony, but if your DW-U10A is working OK, why risk it?
in fact if you do not know,
you get a load of probs,
it does not need a driver, it has what is called firmware inside the drive,
lookup the firmware number on the case of the drive, or the the BIOS should tell you at bootup,
Mine works OK with the Disks i've already mentioned, plus the Bulkpaq Orange DVD-R's & UKDVDR DVD-R which are, i think, two different dyes, ritek & princo,
Win XP on NTFS works better with this drive,
read thru all 12 pages of this thread, and digest it, but do not panic, people have got confused and sent drives back,
but a lot have got things sorted,
Go in to settings, system, hardware, device manager, find your drive, click the cross, properties,(its device useage in WXP),
that should get it back after you reboot,
try that,
Sony is a good brand, should work eventually.

Im not sure how to do this..my first computer and all. I hooked up both DVD and CD rom drive to the same IDE cable. on the jumpers i have CDROM as being master and DVDROM being slave, since i use the CDROM more.

firemanX, first check your BIOS settings and make sure everything is all good. Then you can try setting both drives to cable select and see if that helps.
BTW...if you set both drives to cable select, then the drive thats on the end of the cable becomes master, and the one in the middle position will be the slave.

My Dw-u10a registers in windows and Nero just fine. It plays DVDs... but that's it. It does not read cdrs or dvd-r (I haven't tried + media). I have tried several brands including TDK, Vertabim, Medianca (Intenso) and Fuji (CDR).

So, I cannot burn a damn thing. Nero keeps asking me to put a blank media in the drive and even when it does recognise a dvd, it writes the lead in, then fails queuing, and then halts at 2-4%

looking at the Nero log,

Starting Physical Sector Number of Data Area: 30000 h (DVD-ROM, DVD-R/-RW, DVD+R/+RW)
End Physical Sector Number of Data Area: 0 h
End Sector Number in Layer 0: 0 h
Data in Burst Cutting Area (BCA) does not
exist

it seems blatant that again we have a failure to recognise media. But it's not a brand failure. I have checked the media compatibility chart and certain brands should have worked fine.

I've been told by trader that while the pioneer has media problems the sony should work with everything (even though the compatability chart says otherwise).

I've tried switching Pio mode, switched Master Slave jumpers, Updating Nero to ver. 5.10 and 6. I've updated firmware from 1.0d to 1.1f to 500a to 2.0f, still no joy.

I'm returning mine. I've seen this problem posted at least twice and no solution. Everyone else seems to just have problems burning at 4x speed. I can't burn AT ALL!!!

firemanX, try unplugging your other sony drive and set the Dw-U10A to Secondary Master,
Double check all your connections, RAM is a bugger to get in right.....
Gunsmith, I got rid of Nero completely, and now i can burn everything i've tried OK, using Easy CD&DVD creator 6, with the minimum installed that you need, you can always install stuff later if you THINK you need it,
I think Nero can affect other progs, or Nero is susceptible to some other progs that are already installed, thus causing probs, someone in this thread said that to reinstall Windows (XP on NTFS is best)with the drive already installed sorts things,
I've burnt DVD+RW, DVD-R with ritek and princo dyes......
Do not be tempted to do a firmware upgrade to DRU-500A unless you have tried all other options... (find them out here)
OK?

One big mistake I see alot of people making is they are trying to use Nero and\or easy cd creator. Most people who seem to be having problems are trying to use one of these two progs. They can creat bigtime compatibility problems, specially with xp. I would say uninstall these if you have them and use something else. Stomp RecordNow is a great program to use. Haven't seen any posts in this forum with people saying they have had problems using it. For DVD 5 ripping and burning I would say to use DVDDecryptor. Its free, easy to use and very reliable.

Hi, this doesn't help a lot but I returned my DW-U10a and quoted this forum and others as the reason why the drive was not operating as it should (ie loads of media problems/need to do firmware updates/unsupported by Sony etc). The company swapped it out for an NEC 1300a which also has some compatability problems but does write bulkpaq orange 4x DVD-R (64p each) at 4x. I will never buy Sony again as I paid £250 for the drive back in March and have spent a hell of a lot of time and money trying to get the damn thing to work.

Just glad to see the back of it.

Cheers

I also have uptodate aspi drivers, if that's a concern.

I do have padus discjuggler and Nero 6 installed on my XP. I'm considering one last try but I'm very tired of opening my case up again...

Using links found on this thread, I've flashed my dw-u10 all the way and back, no problems.

above Post came out weird:

I meant to say, the drive reads dvd films, but NOTHING else. No other media is recognised by windows or Nero, burnt or blank. Could this really be just a software problem?

I'm pretty sure I've gone through all the solutions bar reformatting, which seems a bit drastic...

Gunsmith, if your using windows over a long period, reformatting & reinstalling the thing is something you should really get used to, once your confident doing it, it solves a lot of probs!
I think its very likely, a software prob, people in this thread have been on the point of sending the drive back, but it does work, you just have to get used to it.....
keep trying....

ok, I unplugged my master HD and prepared to install XP on my slave.

The dwu10a is not just a DVD burner, it reads CDs and burns CDRs.

However, even though it's recognised by the bios, it won't even read my XP CD, thus I cant even boot from it. I think that confirms far enough that it is NOT a software problem.

I think anyone who has the problem where the dvd will only play dvds and do nothing else, including reading normal CDs, should return the drive, it could be a faulty batch.

Gunsmith, there is no "faulty batch of drives". Just alot of people who don't know what they're doing. The only constant in this whole thread is the drive it self. From that point out, everything is diffrent between users. Mabey you should take a few steps back if you are like barn.door, who needs to re-format and re-install every so often to clean up problems he can't figure out. "Get used to it"?. Christ barn.door, how many times have you had to re-install. Or should I ask, how long have you managed to keep an os without screwing it up.

Mynutts, I had said that I was attempting to make a new installation of XP on a "fresh" drive. If that's not taking all the steps back I don't know what is.

Perhaps the Drive is faultless. But it certainly isn't plug and play friendly to MY pc. I've wasted enough time already.

As for reformatting and installing, you must be one of those people who only have 3 progs installed on their pc. I have at least 20, and at some point there is always some sort of conflict or error (or even just slowing down the machine) for which the best solution is a throrough wipeout every few months. Every PC veteran recommends it, at least those that I have talked to.

Gunsmith, at the moment I have 127 programs installed, not including 16 games.I have NO conflicts or unnecessary slow down. The reason being is that I know how to use Component Services and keep running processes to a minimum, 25 on startup at the moment, and that could be reduced by 5 or 6 if I wanted.
But I'm not hear to bash anyone or play 'my dick is bigger than yours', I was just trying to help.

I'm just a simple home user :( I would have no idea how to keep my pc in tip top condition, it always seems to need reformatting at some point.

No offense taken! But I can only give up now... unless the trader won't take it back! I will try to get a replacement sony drive since I don't fancy the pioneer's media problems. I will keep you posted on developments!

Girls,Girls,temper,temper, please....
Gunsmith,
DO NOT GIVE UP!
If a tossa like me can make a DW-U10A work, then i'm sure it will be a cakewalk for someone like you,
you said-
"ok, I unplugged my master HD and prepared to install XP on my slave."
Install XP in NTFS on a hdd set to master on IDE one
Mynutts - about every 6 months, keeps you on your toes, even the best people can bugger up windows, seems to be built that way, remember, there is a whole industry built up writing progs to keep Windows going, Norton Utilities for one,
Mynutts.....
you sound nervous about reinstalling windows,
you should know how to do it, if you are using Windows and installing software and drives,
the easy way is to image your drive, stuff like Norton Ghost or Powerquest drive image, for instance.....
