Yeah lets hope the same thing doesnt happen to slysoft that happened to DVD Decrypter. but i really feel things will be ok in the long run new software will rise and some will go as is life but for now AnyDVD is the best out there , using it with DVDCopy3 with great success

Hi there,
I am absolutly no expert, but here's my question/comment regarding DVD Decrypter and AnyDVD.
DVD Decrypter was a software that let you RIP protected DVD to your harddrive. Considered illegal in several countries (I guess).
On the other hard, AnyDVD doesn't copy, doesn't RIP and doesn't duplicate. Therefore doesn't really do anything illegal !
Is it illegal just to remove protection ?
Its just removes the protection, just like a plain DVD player does when you watch a movie/dvd right ?
Said that, does this mean AnyDVD "by itself" does nothing illegal.
It's the RIPPER or the copier software that makes it illegal...
Comments people ?

Well there is a difference in this situation between both companies. Slysoft is on a little island in the Caribeaean that does not have laws against disabling dvd encryption. Decrypter was made in England, where there is laws against ripping a dvd to your hard drive. They are in different places and remove the encryption differently. So I think Slyfsoft will be around for awihle :-)

Excerpt from online article
Quote: Struan Robertson, an IT lawyer with Pinsent Masons law firm, said the developer could have been breaking the law in the UK.
"If he is offering software that decrypts the copy protection mechanisms on DVDs then he risks being found guilty of an offence even in this country," he said. The developer's liability would be under the Copyright and Related Rights Regulations 2003, which implemented the European Copyright Directive.
"In the UK our current laws are similar to some provisions in the DMCA so if you are interfering with copy protection mechanisms then unless you can say you are doing it for purposes of research you run the risk of prosecution," said Robertson.

So are DVD Players Illegal in the UK then because they are to break an encryption to play the disk? Just playing with it a little a lawyer should challenge it on those grounds. Bottom line is someone will always find away around it.
