I am trying the speed up the proccessing speed, now can i keep the same motherboard which came with a compaq presario 7478 an just get a new cpu? Can i buy a cpu up to about 2.3 GHZ? I am trying to build a computer but keep some of the parts as well. I recently bought memory for this motherboard and would like to keep it if at all possible. If you need more info please let me know. Thank you for your help and advice.

Yea sorry i have 2 sticks of 128. when i tried to reply to you my computer wouldnt go to the page and then i ended up forgeting. So anyways hope you can help me out. Ohh ok so you are saying that I cannot update the cpu? Alright thanks

So what you are saying is that the CPU cannot be replaced? So basically in order to get a faster cpu i would have to upgrade the m otherboard, which would in turn mean i would have to buy all ne memory? Thanks and look forward to talking to you..

Given the age of the K6-2 processor, the motherboard it fits in will likely only support SDRAM, and certainly only the K6 series of CPUs. If you wish to upgrade the cpu, you need to change the motherboard but not necessarily the RAM. Some motherboards these days do I believe have support for SDRAM, but you'll probably need to go looking. If no luck, look for Elixir DDR RAM, the cheapest stuff around!

Those stupid people - that is an Athlon XP+ mobo (SocketA) and, while it will also mount a Sempron CPU, you will have a hard time fitting an Athlon64 CPU!
Buddy, keep your nice old PC together (it's good that you bought it memory) and it can still be used.
Heck, it will probably run WinXP with 256MB...
But it's not gonna be any 3000 or whatever, y'know?
If you want a new CPU (who doesn't?) you will need a new motherboard for it, and new memory and probably new power supply for that mobo.
You will need a new AGP 8x or PCI-eXpress (better) video board.
If you are really tough for budget, you can plug that new stuff into your old case and harddisks etc, but try to keep the old PC together if possible.
You could run Linux on it, you always wanted to learn Linux, right?
At least, keep the old CPU/mobo/memory together - somebody could build a new rig outta that. Sell it!
So let's see, to hop-up your old rig you could put 512MB memory in it, and - that's about it :^)
If you want a new rig, I would consider:
MSI RS480M2-IL, Socket 939, ATI Radeon XPRESS 200 Chipset w/ x16 PCI Express (ATX) - Onboard Video, 5.1 channel Audio, SATA Raid, 10/100 Lan and Firewire. For AMD® Athlon? 64 and AMD® Athlon? 64FX CPUs. Requires PCI Express VGA Card.

So $440 + $60 for 512MB PC3200 (2x256MB) = $500 bucks Canadian.

Can you see why upgrading an old PC is just not cost-effective?
