router and wireless internet problem!

Hi everyone

Now i am quite technical and build PC for myself and friends but i have no idea about networking at all really. This problem is that i have an internet connection point (telewest) in the dining room and i am moving the PC to the kitchen which is about 20 metres away. So i went and purchased a router and wireless router and usb reciever.

I am now not sure if i have confused what i can do with this set up. My idea was to connect the modem to its normal point in the dining room and then connect the router to the modem. Then i connected the usb reciever to the computer in the kitchen and nothing happened. Now either i have done something wrong or you can not do this full stop without another pc??

Any help would be greatly recieved.

Well your going to have to configure the router first. You need to make sure SSID is broadcasting. Also, you may want to set up a WEP to secure your router. Write the WEP key down, you'll need it for the pc going wireless ... for added security you can do MAC filter.

hi flip

First i would like to make clear that i only have one PC in the house. I have been reading the net and everywhere i look it says i need two PC's

As you pointed out if the initial connection point from the (call it telephone socket) wall is connected to the modem and then the modem is connected to the router, which both are powered up (No PC in this room) then the reciever is connected to the PC. I thought this would be correct.

The router and reciever are "Linksys" linksys@home home wireless g-router on the actual product and Home wireless-g usb adaptor

I understand you only have one pc, but to set it up your going to have to hook the "only" pc in the dining room.

You need to set up the router. If you don't you'll never get it to broadcast.

don't need 2 computers for a wireless router as long as have a wireless netcard on pc. did that on a customer's computer & router, both wireless router & wireless pci netcard were made by linksys. did you do the setup program by linksys & have you even used the reset button on the router??

let me repeat myself ...

It doesn't matter how many pcs you have. Your still going to need one (initially) connected to the router. So you can configure the router.

Once you have configured the router, then you can unhook it and go wireless.

If one isn't hooked up to the router, how are you suppose to enable SSID Broadcasting?

like flip said along with creating a certain SSID and WEP encryption you also have to config your router for the PPPoE settings so your router connects to your internet connection. (entering your username, password and whatnot)

did you follow the insructions with the router? I just setup a linksys wireless router for my neighbor and it was simple. Just insert the CD which gives you step by step instructions
