I just noticed that there is a new update for my Sony DRU 710A drive. It's verion BYX4. It says to uninstall any packet writing software i.e Nero and to disable DMA setting. My question is do you really have to uninstall any packet writing software and what about the DMA setting? Has anyone updated there drives with out doing doing this? The reason I ask is because I can't find my Nero CD that came with the Drive.

i have~ :) flashed new firmware about a month ago with NO problems at all~ you should be ok as well~ best of luck~

p.s. i never HAD packet writing software to begin with as it was problematic w/ my other dvd burning software so i permanantly removed it from Nero once i figured out it was the culprit~ DMA will not be altered by the flash of firmware~ mine remained the same after reboot~

Packet writing software is DirectCD, InCD, DLA etc. If you have InCD installed with Nero you may want to remove INCd permanently as it does cause conflict. You do not have to remove all of Nero.More than likely you have the express Nero which doesn't include it. DirectCD and DLA come from programs like Roxio, Stomp or Sonic burning software.
Open up "My Computer" and right click on your burner Drive letter; then click properties -- It will show you if DLA is installed and you can disable there if it is.
As far as DMA being disabled, I defer to my good friend KIVORY...

Thanks for the response guys...OK, I flashed the firmware-no problems. Only thing is I can still only burn at 8X. I am using Nero along with Verbatim 16x printable dvd-r's. I thought I was gonna be able to burn at 12x now. Any suggestions?

check to make sure your DMA is : ON~ seems like you might have gone back and reverted to PIO mode.

Juhnny:

Here is Sony's recommended media for your model:

http://sony.storagesupport.com/dvdrw/710mediainfo_gb_all040820.html

How fast your burner works depends on your DMA being enable, which KIVORY as alluded to, and the firmware.

Let me say from experience, Sony, is different. Their machines and firmware is generally scaled down to a slower pace. While MCC (Verbatim) is on the recommended media list, it is possible their firmware is set that you can not write over 8X. (As you can see on their list, Sony only recommends $x and 8X media)

Also check your software burning settings, what speed do you have it set on.

But my suggestion, stick with the Verbatims and burn at a slow speed (4x) and you will have quality output.....
