same for me, what i think is that when u burned it at 1x (if u did) and your burner cant do 1x it will be very laggy in-game. try the minimun speed that your burner can do.

Even 4x is still too fast! I say 1x if not, 2x.

I had the same problem with lagging because I was using cheap media. I spent a little more money on some better discs and now I have no problem.

anytime your are experiencing trouble playing backups you should clean your ps2 lens first.it eliminates the lens as the problem or that might be your problem.i suggest cleaning with alochol and swab for older ps2 and a cleaner disc might work well for a newer ps2.

Yeah, I'm having the same lag on my backup of Ace Combat 5. I use verbatim DVD+R and burned both at 2x and 4x (the only speeds my burner allows) I've tried a bunch of times with different dvd+r's, different write speeds, etc... I wonder if there's something wrong with the iso?

Well, my Verbatim DVD+R worked horribly for GTA San Andreas, (as in major lag). I have read several posts by some of the experts here that claim that SA and MVP do NOT need a patch/rebuild.
If you want to burn AC5, use DVD Decyptor to read and write the ISO, burn with a Maxell DVD-R at 1X, and use a Swap Magic 3.3 or above, (that's what I did for AC5).
I'm gonna guess media. Perhaps a real high quality...

I wish I could. Unfortunately, my dvd burner only writes in + format. DO you think it's possible that backing it up to a dvd-r instead would make a difference because I thought dvd+r's were more compatible with newer ps2's?

I also tried to backup GTA San Andreas on a Verbatim DVD+R, and also experienced major lag. I reburned the game onto a Taiyo Yuden DVD-R and it works flawlessly. I thin the main problem here is bad media. You should definitiely try -R media if u get a chance. I know for a fact my PS2 hates +R.

Maybe I should try Taiyo Yuden DVD-Rs. Are they sold at Wal-Mart/Best Buy/Target? I ordered some Ritek G05 DVD-Rs online, but for now I have Maxell 8X DVD-Rs, (seem like really high quality discs), and yet when I burn GTA SA on 1x or 2x it lags liks a son of a gun. MVP2005 is an even worse lag. I thought Maxell was pretty good?

Cleanin the lens usually doesn't help sui-cyco. I mean what are the chances of some dust on the disc actually settling on the lens, instead of flying to the side as a result of the great centrifugal force on the disc?
I am also just talking from experience-switching to good media ended all my problems.
@SnakeEatR-You should definitely buy some media manufactured by Taiyo Yuden. I know that Fujifilm DVD-Rs used to be manufactured in Japan, by Taiyo Yuden, but for some reason, Fujifilm has started sellin DVD-Rs MADE IN TAIWAN which are not made by Taiyo Yuden but some other manufacturer(can't remeber which). If you go to Best Buy or Circuit City, you will find Fujifilm media, but make sure it is MADE IN JAPAN. That media will work fine.
You can also buy Taiyo Yuden media online, but be careful of fakes.
This is where i bought mine:
http://www.meritline.com/taiyo-yuden-4x-dvd-r-media-silver-lacque... These are awesome, they give me no problems.
When your Ritek G05's arrive, I would just set them aside for backing up movies, and data storage, as they are excellent for those purposes. Use just the Taiyo Yuden for PS2 games. Before I tried backing up GTA SA on Verbatim discs, I tried it on G05's, and the lag was about the same as on the Verbatims. Hope this helps.
Oh yeah and I hear that these are the same discs, not sure how well they work tho.http://www.supermediastore.com/taiyo-yuden-4x-dvd-r-media-silver-...
