Problem dvd-rw turns to cd drive when disc inserted?

Had a nec 3520 listed in my computer as a dvd-rw drive but when I put in any sort of dvdr it changes to a cd drive but shows the dvdr icon and won't let me burn any files to it in the likes of nero or alcohol, bought a LG GSA-4163BA same thing happens drive listed in bios as primary master on its own lead ran nero info tool it says that it can burn just fine but I can't, can anyone help this has to be something in windows xp.

I have a Sony dru-710a rw driver and it's doing the same thing. sometimes I might get a disc to stay in DVD rw but otherwise it changes to cd drive. I need help because I think thats what preventing from burning. does anybody have any sugggestions?

I got mine working again, by formaying the hardrive and installing windows xp with built in sp2 but I have turned off automatic updates and have not used any registery cleaner as I think this had something to do with it, although it still says cd drive it can now copy onto dvd whereas before it wouldn't write unto anything, now I have no problems as far as the security updates are concerned I use norten security suite which recommends not using the windows one and to use theirs alone, so problem solved, hope this helps.

I am going to try the updates from firmware but I won't guarrantee success because I had trouble with sp2 update from windows. It collapse my computer. even a dvd rw changes the drive. if anybody else I am open to suggestions

I might tried that as my last resort. A system restore might help as I have experiencing problems with my xp. thanx for the tip. anything else would help greatly . It is tillchanging the dvd rw discs into the cd rom.

Just stick with singlr layer burners as win xp seems to not like dual layer burners, the only way I got mine to work was to reformat the drive and turn off automatic updates, now to use it takes a couple of minutes for the drive to reconize the disc, I find these dual layer burners very slow to start up the disc, they're just not worth it.

hi all! my problem is similar:
i drove on vacation to estonia (my home country :) ) and took my files from my computer in austria with me on 2 dvd-rws. my computer there has a dvd burner (duh, since i wrote the data onto the dvd-rws ;) ), but the computer here only has a dvd/cd-rw drive, so it doesn't write dvds. however, since it reads dvds, it should also read dvd-rws. my problem is that it doesn't; it simply does not detect that there is a disk in the drive. i have the same program on this computer that i burned the files onto the dvd-rw in austria with: Nero InCD 4.3.
i read this and the other thread provided by fishily, and i think i can add some information to the problem: when i put the dvd in and open the properties window, it shows 0 kb of 0 kb size because it simply doesn't detect the disk (the properties window looks exactly the same with no disk inside); and on the tab "InCD", it shows that my drive doesn't support DRT-DM. i've explored quite a few sites in the internet and found out that for the drive to be able to read it, you possibly need a UDF 2.0 (or some similar version) driver. but still i don't know much about this new DRT-DM system and one quesion i've wondered about is if a drive that doesn't support DRT-DM will even support it after installing a new driver (which i think it should, though, because many sites state that most dvd drives should be compatible with DRT-DM, and my computer is only a year old).
so please, can anybody help me out and maybe shed a little light on the topic DRT-DM and it's compatibility with and requirements for drives? i'd be very thankful for your help.

what i did to fix my problem was to open up the computer, disconect all the wires, then reconect them. and also change the jumper to a different location.
Hope That Helps
If that doesnt work, try going to Device manager, then click on the drive thats giving you the problem and push the button on the toolbar that has a computer under a big X that says "uninstall" and click on it. Restart your computer and the device should be how you entered it first.

I have been in contact with the Sony Support staff and they have me changing different drivers, downloading asapi files to the driver and finally updating the firmware, all have failed. I weas having problems with my Dell and told them about it and they suggested this drive might be defected. I bought it 6 months agao at Best Buy. I can buy a decent drive for half the money on the net and get credit for this one. My options with Sony are drying up/ What does everyone think? I can't burn movies as the device driver doesn't show it is burning on DVD Shrink and Decrypter

i also have a similar problem i used your step by step guide to burn movies and i was doing it on Alcohol 120% and it was working fine until when u have to press start to start burning the movie and when i do this it looks for a cd or dvd and i have inserted a empty dvd disc but it still says please insert a cd/dvd in the cd/dvd Recorder i have been stumped on this for days now tryin to figure it out can u plz help me

I have exactly the same errors. As soon as I insert a blank DVD into my NEC-3540A Drive Explorer shows/switches from DVD-Drive(D:) to CD-Drive (D:). I can however burn the inserted DVD (with CloneDVD), but the result is not readable on the PC (PowerDVD, WinMedia, etc). It is perfectly readable on my home DVD Player so. Trying to explore the burnt DVD shows no content and no DVD structure (Video_TS). This problem is really driving me mad and I'm sure it appeared over time. I did not have it before. But before what I do not remember. I'm pretty sure it has to do with some SP2 or automatic WinXP upgrade/hotfix. Furthermore the problem is appearing randomly. I just now burnt with DVDFab successfully the main move from an .iso file mounted on a virtual drive.

Somehow after rebooting my computer from the start due to errors the Dvd rw is fine but now I have burning with Shrink and Decrypter and it seems the movie is successful in burning but when playing it on the DVD nothing happens. a disc error appears. I am using Maxell, sony and Tdk +r disc. The dvd rw is a sony dru-710a burner. Any help will be appreciate, I am creating many coasters

I had the same problem with my pioneer burner. Tried restore, made sure everything was updated, etc. I even removed the drives, checked all connections, blew them out with compressed air, no dice. Finally just replaced the stupid thing and have had no probs since. Probably had done 5-600 burns on it, so I guess I can't complain too much.

well i have found a solution to my problem i now use VCD gear to turn my movie files into a mpg file and then burn it with Nero and Nero now actually accepts the movie file now :D but if u dont have Nero use DivToDvd after u've used VCD gear and after DivToDvd finishes changing the files it will ask you to insert a empty disc if you want it to burn it for you and insert and empty disc and press okay and it will start to burn it for you this worked for me try it and write back to tell me if it worked or not
