cd/dvd+rw no longer reads dvds but reads cd's, HELP!

ive been burning many movies for about half a year now and suddenly my combo teac dvd/cd rw will no longer read any blank dvds, or store bought dvds but has no trouble with cd's. no new media has been installed or anything like that. tried reinstalling, and the device manager says that the device (cd/dvd combo) is functioning proerly, which it is not! any help would be greatly appreciated. and also is it possible that it is shot? thanks in advance.
